What to Know to Prepare for a Mediumship Reading

Most mediums will never give a formal reading with their gifts.
Those that do, often do so impromptu and informally for their family and friends.
And then, there's an even smaller majority still will give readings as a professional practice for pay, just as a therapist, a grief counselor, or a massage therapist would charge an hourly rate, there is generally a whole lot more that goes into an hourly session than most people expect.
So it used to be a very rare thing to have a mediumship reading, it's not impossible anymore, as more and more practitioners are coming out of the closet every day.
Now, more people are getting healing sessions with mediums than ever before, and because of this, the industry is expanding, ideas are opening up and lots of new procedures and products are coming onto the market.
Whether you're booking an angel reading to ask about life issues, or a soulmate reading to ask about your partner, a medium can help so if you're booking your mediumship reading for the first time, or your twentieth, here's what you need to know:
Mediums are specialists. Not all mediums specialize in communicating with the dead, as that is only one type of spirit that a medium has to deal with and trains to deal with. Other types of spirits that people go to mediums to communicate with include: angels, spirit guides, earth spirits, earth bounds (to remove them), and pets.
They also communicate and bring through communications with them in different ways. Not all mediums are predominately clairaudient, this is the type of medium that gives names, dates and anniversary letters. Many mediums, in fact just as many as the clairaudient type, are primarily clairsentient or primarily clairvoyant. These mediums bring through just as fantastic, though different, types of information than the clairaudient kind: causes of death, illnesses, medical intuition, appearances, life plans and charts, soul purpose, and relationship imaging and healing.
Different types of spirits bring through different types of information. Deceased people can help you with life problems, though Angels generally tend to bring through more philosophical points, rather than telling them what to do, whereas Spirit Guides tend to be more direct and 'step-by-step' in their guidance. Looking for overarching truths and themes of your situation? Ideas for how to see things differently? Perhaps choose an Angel medium. Looking for more Step-by-Step, tell-me-the-plan-doc type of guidance, maybe look for someone who works more with Spirit Guides.
Choose your spirit type... or let the medium choose. Just like most estheticians can perform most types of facials, most mediums can bring through most types of spirits though they'll generally each have a favorite - but this doesn't mean a reading will be best or worse because of it. It's just preference. Whenever I get a reading, I generally let the medium choose who comes through, because this does tend to make for a better reading - just like letting the esthetician choose your facial after evaluating your skin type, will generally lead to a better facial you that, the client, is more satisfied with.
Don't expect the deceased to be exactly who you thought they were while alive. Most people expect their parents to be exactly the people they were while alive and while this is sometimes the case, people change in death. They soften. Their views shift. This is the whole premise of the movie, What Dreams May Come. And while many will come back to the reading table more compassionate than they were on earth, or willing to show you a new side of themselves that they never were able to on earth, not all do. With anyone we interact with on earth, we only see just a sliver of who they really are - for example, daughters only show a certain side to their fathers, but in death, this may be different. So don't expect your loved ones to be exactly who you always thought them to be, because it might not quite be that way in the afterlife.
Don't expect them to look exactly the same either. Who wants to be 63 for the rest of their life? You? Just what I thought! The deceased, because they are no longer bound to a physical body in life, get to choose their appearance, and many opt for a younger, healthier self, though not always - some opt for the way people remember them, just to be on the safe side. If this happens, take a review of your old family photos before going to your session to be sure of anyone you think may come, of how they looked... younger. If they had a signature or favorite outfit, they may describe it.
What if who you want to come... doesn't show up? If it's your first reading, it's not unusual for a 'primer' spirit to come to your first reading instead of the one you wanted initially. This spirit's job is going to be to prepare you for more intense future sessions, possibly with someone you were far closer with. Think of it like getting a chemical peel. For your first peel, the technician tends to go very light, progressing to deeper peels and procedures as skin gets accustomed to the process and as the technician learns about your skin and what it can handle.
Future sessions will go deeper into healing old wounds. On the client side, what this means, is maybe the dad who abandoned you and acted as the scorn of your childhood doesn't come through and apologize first time around, instead, your grandma comes first, then your sister's boyfriend, and then finally, the big she-bang happens. It's a process. Some have to work up to it and it's actually often better when you do.
So... if the Spirit you want didn't come, how do you find out where they are? Most mediumship readings will begin by the medium identifying who is speaking, unless in the case of long-term client-medium relationships, where a norm has already been established between the client and the medium.
So if you want to speak to someone directly, and the medium isn't mentioning it - perhaps the energy of that spirit isn't as strong as the others (which would make sense especially if you haven't been able to reach this person on your own), and they may need to be called forward. To prevent disappointment with your session, just ask the medium about it. They'll likely be able to either ask the Spirit World for more details on that individual's whereabouts or be able to tell you more about why this person may not be coming forward or they may actually be able to call them forward through the crowd.
Let us know if things don't make sense. If you were getting a massage and didn't let the masseuse know you were hardly feeling it and needed more pressure, it would be a real shame. But if you didn't stop the masseuse and let them know, whose fault would it be? I know it can be embarrassing to interject but it'll make for a far better reading if you do. Often times, it's just one missed sentence or phrase out of place, and things 'click' suddenly, so it doesn't hurt to say something, in fact, it may help.
You may need another type of session besides a reading. Many mediums offer coaching sessions, in addition to their readings. Coaching sessions are basically readings, where you'll still get guidance from your guides, spirits and your spirit team, but they differ in the fact that they don't waste all the time in the beginning on advanced identifications and evidence of the afterlife.
These types of sessions spend more time on solving your life issues and on getting you the tangible guidance you can use. Need to know what your Guides think about XYZ project? Your divorce? Need help executing a plan and want your spirit guidance team's input on it? Starting a business and want to know what to do first? Take a bird's eye view, and do the coaching. It's like getting your astrology chart read, but with spirits, instead of stars.
Be nice to your medium. This is a final last note. Mediums don't have to give readings for a living, in fact, most never do and never will. So a reading is a service that many mediums deliver at the expense of their private lives, their family's mixed feelings, and their personal reputation... all in an effort to help others. Contrary to what some may think, most mediums are genuine humans with feelings and sensitive to criticism, as we all are. If you are looking for certain information, be up front about that. Most mediums are not mind readers - they get the information from the spirits and the spirits will talk about what they believe is important to your path, which doesn't always correlate to what you believe is important to your path.
There is a popular phrase out there, 'Don't Feed the Medium,' and honestly, I'm not a fan of it due to its assumption: the assumption that we're all out there looking for strings (we're not), however, it does make sense in terms of time. If you feed us, you spend more of your session talking, so while that's healing for some, the budget friendly who want to get the most 'bang for their buck' will not want to eat away the session with chatter. Think about it, if you pay for a 60-minute massage, it's the same price whether you spend 20 minutes chatting away the first half or not. If you want to get the most out of your session, as Bob Olson says, just let your medium work, and if the messages aren't making sense, it's probably the analogy that spirit is using that's not connecting with you - so tell your medium so they can try to get the message in another way. A good 5-10 minutes of chatter in the beginning or end of a session to wrap-up or understand your needs is, normal.
Now, that's it.
Finally, remember, your medium is a human, not a freak show. Lots of articles you read on the internet will describe mediums as kind of circus acts, that you can't feed, touch or talk to (omg, vaudeville), but the reality is, most are just as if not more professional than your therapist, hairdresser or make-up artist and they deserve equal level of respect.
Going into your session, understand the dead and the spirit world and their antics will have a lot to do with the type of reading you get (so all readings are different because all spirits are different).
Last but not least, you get what you expect. Going into something expecting to hate it, guarantees you will. Conversely, expecting a positive outcome more likely will yield one. Do your homework and your research on the type of session you're looking for, and this guarantees an even better outcome.
Need help preparing for your session... on a mental, emotional or spiritual level? Well, have I got a few reads for you.
