Before calling in those in Spirit to connect with me, either to ask a question for myself or to deliver messages for another, no matter what the circumstance, I always do three things to prepare myself for an opening connection to Spirit.
Close my eyes
Take three deep breaths
And say a prayer
Of course with endless amounts of time, there are meditations, candles and specific preparations I like to do in order to ready myself for the best session possible, but no matter what the set up, no matter where I am, these are the staples of my mediumship practice.
With these three keys to practicing, I can bring through Spirit anywhere, as simplicity is the basis of connecting purely and seamlessly.
Everyone has some version of their own preparations to connect with Spirit, where many rituals, like mine, are highly personal, but almost all include a method of centering and an honest intention and wish for the outcome of the connection.
This is called the invocation for Spirit.
Each time you call in Spirit, there are three main steps to follow to ensure the highest and best connection possible for both yourself and all those involved.
Step 1. Ground
Grounding and rooting yourself to the physical earth before linking and extending upward is similar to tying a balloon to a fence post, before the wind starts blowing or dropping an anchor into the ocean, to keep a ship in place. It keeps you rooted in yourself, your values and your ethics, no matter who or what you connect to in Spirit.
When I close my eyes, I am visualizing a grounding cord that connects me to the Earth and I’m imagining everything in the physical world vanishing, so I can focus my full attention on the spiritual world.
There are many ways to ground including meditation, this is the meditation I use:
Step 2. Clear
Clearing out your self from any non-essential emotions and thoughts prior to clearly connecting with Spirit with is a key to clear communication with anyone - including those on the other side. Releasing past, present or future worries and concerns allows you to be fully in the present moment with another - both in Spirit and on Earth.
When I take three deep breaths, I am imagining all emotions and thoughts surrounding and within me, being released into the air around me like smoke, and then settling back down around my feet, to the floor earth.
Step 3. Intentional Prayer
The final step is setting a goal for the outcome of your connection with Spirit. This is often called an intention (a determination to act a certain way) or a prayer (an earnest hope or wish, a request for help).
In mediumship, it’s called an intentional prayer and we mix the two together. In the intention, you set the standard for how you will act in the interaction of spiritual communication. In the prayer, you ask for all those involved to assist you and honor this process. Mediumship is a three way process, so we combine the intention to honor others and the prayer to ask others to join into this bond with the same intent. The intentional prayer for mediumship can be said within (internally) or out loud (externally) and is always stated before any individuals in Spirit are called to step forward to connect, regardless of if they are Spirit Guides, Angels or Loved Ones.
If grounding and clearing were setting the stage of mediumship, the intentional prayer is drawing back the curtain.
The intentional prayer that I use when connecting with Spirit is simple, universal and can be said within just a few seconds, making it very easy to remember and include in a pinch.
A prayer of intention for mediumship:
I step forward to connect with Spirit in truth and love, and welcome in those who wish to do the same, for the highest and greatest healing of all involved.
This prayer can be used in all circumstances when you connect with Spirit including before you go into a meditation with your Guides and Angels, before you connect with Spirit for others, and even before you ask for guidance or signs from your Loved Ones in Spirit. You can use it when connecting genuinely with others in Spirit in physical body (people in your life), as they too, are Spirit within. I encourage you to create your own and if you already have one, please share it in the comments below.
These are my fail-safe preparation steps to opening the connection to Spirit - and this is what I teach others.
No matter what you to do to get into the groove of connecting include a centering, a clearing and a prayer into your practice. Adapt what you have so that it can be extended into an hour or more preparation or within just a few seconds, as you can incorporate all three into the same practice - whether it is spur of the moment or planned well in advance.
Close your eyes and take three deep breaths as you send your wishes and intention up to Spirit and begin your connection.
