5 Ways the Summer Solstice Holds Spiritual Power

The period surrounding the moment of the Summer Solstice is one of my favorite times of the year.

Whether you’re in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, the Summer Solstice marks a time when the daylight is the longest.

Where I am, in the Northern Hemisphere, it marks a time when the Sun is reaching the northernmost part of the sky and it lands somewhere between June 20th and 22nd every year. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s between December 20th and 22nd every year.

Interestingly, the Summer Solstice is not an entire day - instead it’s a moment in time, usually calculated down to the minute, on the day where the Sun reaches its peak point.

This year, for those in the north, the June Summer Solstice will be on Friday, June 20th at 10:42pm EDT. For those in the south, the December Summer Solstice will be on Sunday, December 21st at 10:03am EST.

This special time of year has been honored by ancient cultures who kept track of the sun’s path in the sky - think Stonehenge, built to align with the sun on solstices or Machu Picchu, also aligned to the solstice.

In pagan circles, the summer solstice is known as “midsummer,” because the time is a mid-point in the growing season.

In Latin, the term solstice combines sol (Sun) and sistere (stand still), meaning the sun stands still, which at the Arctic Circle is true - as during the Summer Solstice, the sun is present for 24 continuous hours.

In the Astronomical calendar, the Summer Solstice marks the first day of summer.

For the purposes of this post, we’ll be focusing on the Summer Solstice universally being the day of the longest light, so whether that happens for you in June or December, the spiritual meanings are below.

5 Spiritual Meanings of the Summer Solstice

1 - Manifestation and Abundance

This is a time of soaking up the light and all of nature’s energy. You can use the power of the sunlight to get closer to your goals, bask in the beauty around you and connect with Earth’s abundance.

The abundant bountiful energy Mother Nature is offering right now is a creative source you can tap into as fuel for bringing your dreams to fruition.

It’s an optimal power for manifesting goals that are material in nature. With all the abundance around you, it’s a window for gaining creative inspiration for how you can connect to the bountiful energy to attract more of it into your life.

During the longer days, you’ll have more energy and daylight to achieve outdoor projects, which can support you in making headway on your ventures.

2 - A Window for Expansion

The summer solstice is also a time of expansion. The sun’s rays are offering the most available light and this can hold a symbolic meaning. On the spiritual journey, your goal is to aim for the highest level of soul expansion in your journey closer to “the light,” also known as The Divine.

To celebrate the solstice you could reflect on the expansive and renewing properties of the light. Consider a journaling or meditation prompt to reflect on what it means to expand on your soul growth journey towards the light.

This solstice…

  • Why do you continue to radiate your own inner light?

  • What can you do to deepen your soul’s expansion process?

  • How can you tap into the light within you and connect with your Divine Source?

3 - A Transformational Shift

While the Summer Solstice is the day of the longest light, it also marks the end of the period of increasing sunlight. The Earth has been renewed with a powerful dose of ever-increasing light for the past 6 months until now.

Now that we have hit the day with the most light, the sunlight will begin to slowly fade. The days are now gradually shortening as we head to the longest night.

This midsummer midpoint marks the descent of the sun, so it can be a great time to start thinking about your winter plans, and what you can do now to survive the coming darker days.

You can use the solstice as a shift point, to reflect on what you have achieved so far this year and as a reminder to begin preparing for fall, winter and the coming longer nights.

4 - Bring Something To Life

As summer solstice marks the midpoint of the growing season, it can be a symbolic nudge to bring to life something that needs to be welcomed to the material world.

With an abundance of material resources available, plus the warmth and long-lasting sunlight to achieve your goals, you can tap into the bountiful harvest energy to connect with Mother Earth’s fertility.

Now is the perfect time to invest all that additional natural energy to a project or goal that you have.

You can see the Summer Solstice as the perfect time for a new beginning - whether you are birthing a baby, a project or a new era in your life.

5 - A Time of Completion and Celebration

The plans you made during the darker months are now fully underway. You may be working on a project that you started planning during winter right now. While you might be busy with plenty of work still left to do before winter returns, it’s still a time to celebrate.

Take a moment to sit back and soak in what you’ve achieved since the winter solstice.

Use the summer solstice to step back and breathe in gratitude for what’s been achieved so far. Now assess what can still be done for the rest of the year.

What do you want to welcome into your life for the rest of the year?

All in all, the Summer Solstice is an ideal window for manifesting, abundance and bringing something new to life. It can also represent a time of completion, celebration and expansion.

It’s a spiritually powerful day so make sure to do something special for it - even if you simply take a few breaths to bask in the moment, that’s enough.
