5 Spiritual Meanings of the Spring Equinox
In this post, we’ll discuss the spiritual symbolism of the Spring Equinox - which marks the official start of Spring for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of the zodiac new year.
In fact, until the adoption of the Georgian calendar in the 16th century, the Spring Equinox was considered the start of the new year. It was changed for economic reasons (paying of taxes and rents).
This event typically occurs on the 19th, 20th or 21st of March every year and this year, the first day of spring will be on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 10:46 a.m. EDT.
It is also known as the first point of Aries, because that is when we shift from Pisces, the twelfth sign to Aries, the first sign in the zodiac wheel of the year.
The start of spring is one of my favorite times of the year because it happens during my birthday month and I love the warmer weather, the flowers budding in the trees, plus all the pastel colors of the season.
I also love the fresh start themes of spring, as the Spring Equinox is also called the Vernal Equinox, with vernal meaning “new” or “fresh.
The word equinox, means equal night, and it’s the pivot point in the year where here in the North, we will now see longer days.
The sun is now crossing the equator and moving from the south to the north, as a result we get more sunlight.
This period of rising light continues for around 92.8 days, when it reaches its peak on the Summer Solstice, at which point, days begin to get shorter and nights get longer again.
Now that we’ve covered what it means and when it’s happening, let’s talk about the spiritual significance of the Spring Equinox.
Below you’ll find 5 Spiritual Meanings of the Spring Equinox:
1 - It’s time to emerge
Winter is all about rest, protection, rejuvenation - a time when beneath the frozen exterior, life gathers strength. It’s a protective period when energy consolidates and waits.
Now all the hidden work that happened under the surface comes forward.
The Spring Equinox marks a time when all the inward preparation can move to outward visibility.
Whatever has been incubating - a creative project, a truth, a new identity - now begins to emerge.
The Spring Equinox invites you to notice where energy is rising after a period of stagnation, which ideas are returning to you after being on hold, and what in your life is asking for your conscious participation.
Which concepts or ideas have you been experimenting with in private that you’re ready to share with the world?
2 - Welcome in a new, positive chapter
The Spring Equinox marks a turning point between what has been and what will be. It’s a doorway - you aren’t asked to know the entire way ahead, but just to turn toward the new, rising light.
Sometimes, these new doorways are quiet - a perspective shift or an inward private decision that is made and not yet announced publicly.
Other new chapters announce themselves loudly - the beginning of a new partnership or a change in jobs.
The Spring Equinox heralds in more light and with that, an opening to a fresh start.
What new beginnings are coming forward in your life? What “rising light,” or new path, can you turn towards?
3 - Tap into hopeful, optimistic energy
Spring represents growth and renewal.
We see this embodied in the Earth all around us with plants coming up out of dormant soil, trees bursting with flowers, birds chirping, soil thawing, snow becoming rain and of course, more sunlight.
Because of all the renewed growth in Nature, it brings forward feelings of hope, optimism, joy and positive anticipation.
Life is waking up and your Spirit feels it.
The buzz of new life can inspire new ideas, which will make you feel excited to try new things.
You can use this budding new life energy to approach new projects with a child-like sense of wonder and light-heartedness.
What are you drawn toward? What excites you? What gives you hope?
4 - Gain clarity around what you want to manifest
Spring is considered a time of illumination, due to the increasing light of the season.
Supported by Aries, a lively, action oriented sign, we’re offered a zest of energy for charging forward and diving head first into new opportunities.
You can use the Spring Equinox’s rising energy and light to get clear on what you really want to harvest this year, and Aries' fiery energy to take inspired actions which will help make it so.
Sometimes, in order to get clarity on what you want, you need to try out what’s been calling to you - so taking a few experimental steps, rather than committing to the “whole enchilada,” would be an easy way to start.
This month, try out some new ideas so when summer comes in with powerful growth energy, you’ll know what to focus on.
Strive to follow the subtle nudges to guide you to clarity around your next manifestation.
5 - Tap into abundant fertility
Spring Equinox was celebrated by early Pagans as Ostara.
The holiday honors Eostre, the Germanic goddess of spring and fertility, whose name derives from the same root as the word “Easter.”
It marks the awakening of the Earth from winter’s slumber and the return of life.
The symbols of Ostara are eggs, representing the return of fertility to the landscape, and rabbits, representing both fertility and abundance.
Now is a great time to metaphorically or tangibly prepare the soil and plant seeds of what you want to see grow in abundance. It signals the Earth’s fertile landscape being ready to receive new life.
What would you like to see in abundance?
The Spring Equinox symbolizes having a fertile window available to help make it happen.
All in all, the Spring Equinox represents a time to emerge from your protective shell so you can welcome in a new positive chapter in your life.
You’re supported by life’s hopeful, optimistic energy, which will lead to new ideas around what you want to manifest next.
The abundance of fertile, renewal energies will support what you’re nurturing and tending to this year so you can see it grow, plus, the extra sunlight will help give you the boost of energy needed to make things happen.
What new ideas, fresh directions and creative energies are rising up in you?
