When your Root Chakra is open and flowing, there is a sense of stability that comes from within.

You feel supported.

You trust yourself.

You are less attached to future outcomes because you know who you are, regardless of what happens next.

The Root Chakra, also known as the Muladhara Chakra, is the first energy center in the Chakra System - the energy network of the body.

Located at the base of the spine near the tailbone, it is the energetic foundation of your auric field and the anchor connecting your soul-body to Mother Earth’s Energy.

Associated with the color red, this energy center governs security, groundedness, independence, self-sufficiency, strength, and your connection to the material world.

When the Root Chakra is open, energy flows upward through all of the other chakras, nourishing your entire energy body.

This is one reason why if I feel unbalanced anytime, I simply open my Root Chakra because it can create positive shifts throughout your whole energetic system.

Yet, the Root Chakra is also one of the most commonly blocked chakras.

Because it is connected to feelings of safety, security and thus, survival, any experience that destabilizes your sense of safety can leave an energetic imprint here.

Even years later, a reminder of that experience can cause this energy center to tighten or close in an effort to protect you from taking in anything genuinely energetically unsafe or low vibe.

The beautiful thing is your energy field is always capable of returning to balance.

Here are a few simple ways to begin opening your Root Chakra and reconnecting with the supportive energy that is always available beneath your feet.

3 Powerful Ways to Open Your Root Chakra

1. Connect with Snake Energy and Awaken Your Inner Strength

The Root Chakra is often represented by the snake, a sacred symbol of transformation, wisdom, and Kundalini Energy.

Kundalini is the life force energy that rests at the base of the spine and rises through the chakra system as spiritual gifts awaken and expand.

For many people, periods of spiritual growth begin with activation in the Root Chakra because it is the foundation upon which all higher energetic development is built.

Try this simple Kundalini Energy visualization:

  • Sit comfortably with your palms facing upward.

  • Take three deep breaths.

  • Visualize a snake made of golden energy and light gently wrapping around your body.

  • Feel yourself being supported, restored, and protected.

  • Ask this energy if it has a message for you.

  • When complete, imagine the golden snake coiling into your Root Chakra and resting there.

Pay attention to what you feel, sense, or intuitively know during this practice. Messages from Spirit Energy often arrive quietly at first.

2. Begin Every Day (or each new moment) with a Grounding Practice

One of the quickest ways to nourish the Root Chakra is through grounding.

Grounding helps reconnect your energy body to the Earth so that you can feel more centered, present, and supported in your everyday life.

The simplest grounding practices are often the most effective.

You might stand barefoot on the grass for a few moments each morning.

You might sit quietly with your feet flat on the floor while you enjoy your morning coffee.

You might even paint your toenails red as a visual reminder of your intention to strengthen this energy center - red is the core color of the Root Chakra.

An easy way to ground is to simply visualize a glowing ball of red light in your Root Chakra. Imagine it spinning and glowing brighter with each breath.

Visualize any extra energies that appear being released into the ethers from the glowing red orb as it spins. Repeat an affirmation like this:

“I am grounded, safe and secure at this moment. I have plenty of support in my life and that support comes from many different sources.”

Choose one grounding practice and commit to it daily for a month.

The Root Chakra responds beautifully to consistency. Small actions repeated over time create stable strength in this energy center.

As you ground, notice how your relationship with uncertainty begins to shift.

It often becomes easier to trust the process because your energy is no longer seeking safety outside of yourself.

Grounding practices like those mentioned above can help create the feeling of feeling safe in yourself - anywhere.

3. Visualize Roots Extending from Your Feet

This is one of my favorite Root Chakra exercises because it creates an immediate sense of connection to Earth Energy.

Every tree grows strong because of the roots beneath it. The same principle applies energetically. Visualizing your energy field anchored to the Earth below you pulls up energy from the Earth to fill your Root Chakra.

To practice:

  • Sit or stand with your feet slightly wider than hip-width apart.

  • Take three deep breaths.

  • Visualize roots extending from the soles of your feet.

  • See them moving through the floor and deep into the Earth.

  • Follow the roots with your awareness until they anchor into a place that feels supportive and stable, the boulders under you.

  • Now imagine those roots circling back up, charged with light, into your feet and up through your feet, your legs and into your lower hips.

  • Breathe this energy into your body.

Notice what the roots look like.

Are they from an oak tree? A cedar tree? Are they wide and expansive or deeply anchored?

Over time, you may find the roots change depending on what your soul needs on a particular day. Usually, mine look smooth, like roots from a fig tree.

Allow yourself to receive this energetic support from the Earth.

You do not have to carry everything alone.

Signs Your Root Chakra May Need Attention

Because this chakra is connected to survival, it often speaks through feelings of fear, uncertainty, or instability.

You may benefit from Root Chakra exercises if you notice:

  • Ongoing worry about the future

  • Feeling disconnected from your body

  • Feeling tense or easy to anger

  • Difficulty feeling settled or secure

  • Fear despite having your needs met

  • Challenges taking action on your goals

  • Feeling financial stress or having scarcity thinking

Even when you are OK at this moment, perhaps even better than before, these feelings can still arise when the Root Chakra is out of balance from prior experiences or current triggers.

These emotional experiences are not necessarily signs that something is wrong.

Sometimes, they are simply invitations to reconnect with your energetic foundation.

Root Chakra Affirmations

Affirmations help direct energy and intention toward inner harmony.

Try repeating these throughout the day:

  • I am completely safe where I am right now.

  • Today I take action toward my goals.

  • I have sources of security in my life.

  • Today I focus on all sources of abundance.

  • I have plenty of resources to begin right now.

Choose the affirmation that resonates most and allow it to become your mantra for the week.

Root Chakra Crystals

Crystals can also support Root Chakra balance by helping you anchor into grounding frequencies.

Some of my favorite crystals that can support the Root Chakra include:

Red Jasper is especially supportive for building stability and strength, while Smoky Quartz can assist with clearing dense or stagnant energy.

Carnelian brings a warm, positive energy that encourages forward movement and confidence.

Final Thoughts

Your Root Chakra is the energetic foundation from which all other chakras in your energy field flourish.

When it is open and flowing, it becomes easier to trust yourself, enjoy the present moment, and create a strong foundation for your future.

As you work with this energy center, consider the support you have already created in your life and the support you wish to create moving forward.

The Root Chakra often reveals what is ready to be built, like incoming options for safety and security, and what is ready to be released, like outdated fears stemming from past experiences.

Try any of these activities to clear and balance your Root Chakra.

When you strengthen your root energy center, you strengthen your ability to bring your dreams into reality, because it gives you a sense of stability, and the exercises usually inspire you towards actions that support more of that.
