Before we dive into the spiritual meaning and symbolism of a blue moon, you may be wondering what is a Blue Moon?

A Blue Moon is when two full moons occur in the same month - and the second of those moons is called a Blue Moon.

We will have a Blue Moon this month, with the Full Scorpio Moon on May 1st and the Full Sagittarius Moon on May 31st, which will be the Blue Moon.

I was really looking forward to this Blue Moon cycle.

They are somewhat rare, happening only every 33 months or every 2-3 years, on average, and I missed the opportunity to write about it last time due to other commitments. So I knew when it came back around, an article was due.

So here we are, at the “once in a blue moon,” window, a phrase that refers to anything that’s rare.

The term “Blue Moon” itself first appeared in written text in the 1500s but it was used to describe something absurd or nonsensical.

The term as we know it today, was first referenced in the 1940s by a writer who worked for Sky & Telescope Magazine.

During a Blue Moon, a key point is that unlike during a Red Moon, the moon doesn’t turn blue - that only happens during volcanic eruptions or large wildfires with the dust and soot in the air. It is just a term for a double full moon in a month.

So let’s tune into the spiritual meaning of a Blue Moon, and discuss what it means symbolically and how you can use its energy to support your path.

4 Spiritual Meanings of a Blue Moon

1 - A gateway for rare opportunities

Because this astrological event is rare and cyclical, pay attention to any “once in a blue moon,” opportunities that come up during this time.

It’s a prime window to take a leap, revisit an abandoned goal or or say yes to something unexpected.

How to tune in: during the full moon and the shadow period of 5 days before and after, pay attention to any wild ideas, out of the box concepts that come forward.

Be specifically mindful of those things that support the life phase you are wanting to call in now.

2 - A moment of enhanced intuitive clarity

A full moon is a period of amplified energy when your intuitive connection is stronger. It’s also a thin veil period where it’s easier to connect with Spirit.

In my experience with Spirit connection, I believe the energy of the full moon helps charge your energy field and the energy field of the Earth, making it easier to connect with Spirit for guidance.

Because you have a second full moon during the month, the veil may be thinner than usual. Spiritual teachers that have come before me also believed that Blue Moons make it easier to ask Ancestors for guidance.

How to tune in: meditate under the light of the Blue Moon and ask a question or simply be open.

An answer to something that may have veered off path, may suddenly get clearer. An intuitive question you’ve been asking but have not received direct guidance on yet, may suddenly reveal itself easily.

Expect realizations and shifts.

3 - A period of completion

Typically, Blue Moons occur at the end of the month and full moons, in general, are about bringing things to completion.

Because the month is anchored between two full moons which are events for letting go - think about what you are releasing as we approach this upcoming blue moon.

Focus on letting go of whatever that is so you can shift into the next phase of your life.

How to tune in: meditate on what’s coming to a close during this period and what new beginnings are coming in.

Ask yourself these questions -

What is coming to completion in my life today? Where is my next phase beginning? Is there something I’ve been putting off cutting the cord on?

Is there something I need to honor and grieve? Am I making a change in my life? If so, what needs to shift to make space for that?

Now is the time to invest in letting go so you can move onward and upward.

4 - A potent period of transformation

Because their energy can heighten energy and emotions, Blue Moons can help you tune into deeper emotional wounds or traumas that you would normally ignore.

You can think of a Blue Moon as an extra potent full moon, as you get a double dose of this strongly emotional energy.

In this way, the Blue Moon helps facilitate personal growth. It offers an additional chance to reflect on your life and make changes where necessary.

You may find yourself more reflective during this time, examining your thoughts and emotions more deeply. This can lead to a greater understanding of your inner self and your path forward.

How to tune in: if you become reflective and in your thoughts during this Blue Moon, give yourself some time to ponder. Quiet time with your emotions helps you process and develop inner wisdom from the insights that come to you.

As this rare Blue Moon rises, consider it an invitation to pause, reflect, and respond differently than you normally would.

What’s being highlighted now is ready to be seen, felt, and shifted. You can handle any shifts, rare opportunities or ah-ha moments that come your way.

Whether the blessing of this Blue Moon shows up as an unexpected opportunity, a deep emotional realization, a quiet inner knowing, or a moment of clear intuitive insight, trust the energy is here to move you forward.

Use this time intentionally to release what’s completed.

Stay open to what’s emerging and what phase your life is taking next.

And most importantly, listen closely to any insights that come during a Blue Moon. These could be rare moments of clarity and you’ll want to value them.

What will be your “once in a blue moon” moment?

Only time will tell, but it’s fun to anticipate what it could be.
