5 Spiritual Meanings of the Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse
Published 2026-02-22
The next Lunar Eclipse will be a Blood Moon.
A Blood Moon is the same as a Total Lunar Eclipse, and it’s when the Moon turns red due to the Earth’s Shadow covering the Moon - a phenomenon also called a Red Moon.
Most Full Moon Lunar Eclipses don’t totally align (these are partial eclipses) and the Earth’s Shadow doesn’t completely cover the Full Moon, but when they do, it’s a phenomenon that fascinates night sky lovers.
Lunar Eclipses can only happen during Full Moons and there is one coming up during the March Worm Moon.
It’s kind of a big deal because only 29% of all Lunar Eclipses are Total Eclipses and the next one won’t happen until New Year’s Eve 2028-2029.
Although Full Moons occur monthly, Lunar Eclipses are rare because the Sun, Earth, and Moon must align perfectly for the shadow to be cast.
What Does a Red Moon Mean Spiritually?
If you’re exploring the Blood Moon's spiritual meaning, you’re in the right place. This rare event is an astronomical spectacle and a moment of spiritual power.
The Blood Moon’s spiritual meaning is like an amplified Full Moon and an even more amplified Full Moon Lunar Eclipse, and it’s rooted in release, revelation, and transformation.
You can think of it as the “Spiritual Boss” of all the Full Moon events.
And in reality, many people searching for Blood Moon 2026 spiritual meaning, spiritual meaning of Blood Moon, or what does a Red Moon mean spiritually are really asking:
What is shifting in my life right now?
The five powerful spiritual themes below dive into the Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse spiritual meaning and how you can best experience these shifts.
Scroll down, and we’ll go into deeper detail about what is spiritually happening during a Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse and how to embrace the opportunities this event brings.
The Best Way to View a Lunar Eclipse
Unlike a Solar Eclipse, you can safely observe this event with the naked eye - no glasses are needed.
The exact shade of red that the Moon will appear in will depend entirely on atmospheric conditions - it could be bright red, or more of a coppery tone.
You will only get the Blood Moon effect during a Total Lunar Eclipse. During a Partial Lunar Eclipse, the Moon will look more darkened or “bitten.”
The best viewing times will depend on where you are on the globe.
For North America, here are the estimates per each time zone during the March 3, 2026 Eclipse:
Eastern: 6:04-7:02 a.m. EST (moon sets during totality)
Central: 5:04-6:02 a.m. CST
Mountain: 4:04-5:02 a.m. MST
Pacific: 3:04-4:02 a.m. PST
Alaska: 2:04-3:02 a.m. AKST
Hawaii: 1:04-2:02 a.m. HST
Something else to note about Lunar Eclipses:
They typically happen in pairs with Solar Eclipses - the last Solar Eclipse was February 17th and not visible in the US. After this Lunar Eclipse, we won’t experience our next set of eclipses until August with a Partial Lunar Eclipse on August 28.
Now that we’re done discussing the astronomical importance of this event, let’s dive into the spiritual meaning of it.
As with all astrological/astronomical events, we can apply symbolic meaning to them.
Depending on how deeply you have explored astrology, and how specific you want to get, you may also have come to accept that tangible events can correlate with the sky events too.
So with the spiritual symbolism, you may be able to connect the dots to how each event relates to your life - something I find great joy in doing.
Everyone will experience these energies differently, so how the eclipse energy affects you will be personal to your life experience, but there are some general themes we can expect.
5 Spiritual Meanings of a Lunar Eclipse
1 - Transformation Through Cleansing
The Full Moon Lunar Eclipse is all about intensified completion, clearing, release and letting go. It represents a powerful start of waning energy in the Moon’s cycle.
Consider this a period of spiritual transformation through cleansing any old patterns, relationships or ways of being that are phasing out of your life.
You may notice something departing from your life already - what is it? Can you simply say, “thank you for the lessons, but goodbye?”
It may be abundantly obvious what is “eclipsing out” of your life.
If it isn’t though, consider using this period to eliminate something you have outgrown - spiritually, physically, emotionally or mentally.
Because it’s currently Lent season, perhaps you can pair whatever you’re cutting out of your life for that, with what the eclipse is asking you to release.
2 - What’s Hidden Comes To Light
Everything on the Earth’s surface is illuminated during a Full Moon.
Winter Full Moons are one of my favorite periods to view natural areas of any kind, especially those with breathtaking geological features, for this reason alone.
The land’s curves, the movements of nocturnal animals and even the shapes of plants, are all glowing during this event. It’s a great time to observe how your world looks in the dark.
Since what is previously hidden in the shadows becomes visible during this period, the lunar eclipse symbolism is that it’s an ideal window for secrets, hidden information or anything else previously disguised to be revealed.
Pay attention to any previously masked information that becomes available during this time - you could use the clarity any insights provide to shift your life’s path toward the better.
3 - Intuition May Be Heightened
Full Moons are usually a time when intuition is heightened, and during the Lunar Eclipse this is especially amplified.
It’s spiritually thought to happen because all the Moon’s energy is increasing our own personal energy, helping to strengthen our inner light and knowledge.
Spend some time in meditation. Pay attention to visions, dreams or emotions. They may be guiding you towards a new inner guidance that wants to come forward.
4 - Embrace Space for Change
The ending of things, cutting ties and letting go is not always a negative.
If during an eclipse, you decide to release a source of negativity, it clears emotional space for new items, people and situations to come in.
Just as clearing your mind can be helpful for receiving new insights, clearing your space also creates new opportunities.
I don’t fear eclipses because one of the most positive and exciting aspects of a Lunar Eclipse is that when things depart, you quickly open up to fresh changes and opportunities, which can lead to the betterment of your life.
A great affirmation for the Lunar Eclipse is,
“Universe, I am open and ready for new and better experiences to enter my life.”
The blessing of endings is that they create space for new growth and renewal.
5 - Make Friends with your Shadow Self
One of the deepest spiritual meanings of the Lunar Eclipse is shadow integration.
In Chinese culture, the Moon is considered dark, feminine energy and the Sun is considered light, masculine energy.
During the Lunar Eclipse, it can spiritually be a perfect window to embrace and explore powerful yin-like energies, and “dark,” often hidden emotions we usually avoid: rage, shame, anger, grief, etc.
Spiritually speaking, it’s true these feelings don’t always feel the best to confront at first, but a lot of things that don’t feel the best at first are actually good for you, like exercise.
Safely expressing your most tender emotions through journaling, dance or talking to someone in a safe space, can be a productive task.
These feelings, once cleared, expressed and released, can lead to spiritual ah-ha moments and new levels of inner awareness, knowledge and wisdom.
So, these emotions have spiritual value. It can pay off when you work through feelings our culture often considers “bad.”
From a spiritual perspective, no feeling is technically bad because all feelings can be Divine Messages in disguise.
You simply use heavier feelings as guidance points to help you see what you need to see then let them direct you to higher ground.
A technique for working with heavy emotions we use in spiritual readings is:
Use heavier feelings to identify what you’d rather experience instead and once you have some wanted outcomes in mind, you can come up with a few ideas to get there.
During this Lunar Eclipse, connect with your subconscious wisdom and make friends with your shadow self, as your inner yin-side may have some things to teach you.
How to Work with Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Energy
Do an oracle card reading
Inhale, exhale, choose your deck and shuffle.
Ask, what’s in my highest and greatest good to release?
Declutter your space
Do energy clearing rituals you like.
Clean your house, weed out old spices in your cabinet, remove expired products from the fridge, create space in your digital world by removing files you no longer need, sage yourself, vacuum or sweep the floors, etc.
Meditate to connect with your highest self
Tap into your intuitive inner wisdom with meditation and see if there are any messages that want to come forward.
Journal your feelings
You don’t necessarily need a prompt.
Journal whatever you’re thinking about and try to reach two pages.
If you’re using a digital journal, write whatever you’re thinking about until nothing else comes out.
This practice is best first thing in the morning when you have a lot of to-dos on your mind, or right before bed, to release the day’s activities for rest.
Journaling clears the mind, and helps you identify and release energies you may be holding onto.
If you’re hesitant about journaling because you’re super private about exposing your inner thoughts or concerned someone will find your journal and use its contents against you, write your thoughts on paper, not digitally, and invest in a paper shredder.
Shred the journaled papers as soon as you’re done.
To make this process more spiritually ritualistic and final: burn your journal pages in a cast iron pot or another kind of protected firepit. Say prayers and ask for help from the Divine as the papers turn to ash.
