When stressful things are happening in the world, one of the most grounding and supportive gifts you can offer yourself is a peaceful, calm environment to retreat to.
I learned this deeply during the pandemic.
When everything outside felt like a chaotic sci-fi movie and fear energy was abundant everywhere, all I wanted was a safe, nurturing space to come home to.
Ever since then, I’ve been committed to creating a more tranquil home environment that supports my peace instead of taking away from it.
A peaceful home isn’t just aesthetics; it influences the energy fields of everyone who lives there and everyone who visits the space.
When your surroundings feel calm, often you start to feel calmer. Kids, partners, pets, everyone trends toward peacefulness when the environment is peaceful.
Not too long ago, I wrote a post called How To Make Your Home More Spiritual, which covered ways to infuse your home with a sacred, intentional feel.
Today, we’re continuing that theme by focusing specifically on how you can create a more peaceful home.
Through twelve years of spiritual practice and embodying that practice in day-to-day life, one of the most impactful changes I’ve made is learning how to cultivate a home environment that feels peaceful, supportive and aligned.
Since our spiritual paths (no matter what we call them) are ultimately about bringing in more joy, peace and happiness, your home is the most natural place to begin embodying your practice.
It’s where your energy spends the most time, so it’s where your peace can reflect back to you the strongest.
Your peaceful home can then refill your energetic cup after any draining day, giving back to you in energy all the love that you put into it.
Below are a few simple things I’ve done that have genuinely helped me create a more peaceful home.
5 Easy Ways To Make Your Home More Peaceful
1. Feng Shui The Entrance
In Feng Shui, the entryway is one of the most important energy points of the home. It’s where energy (or “chi”) enters your space.
To invite in harmonized, peaceful energy, make your entryway neat, clean and inviting. This means absolutely no ironic, cynical doormats, mean spirited decor or messiness!
Add fresh, lively plants and flowers
Remove anything dead, broken or stagnant
Choose uplifting decor
For me, this looks like adding energizing flower colors like reds, oranges, and yellows to the porch and keeping the inside area free from shoes, bags, and coats by giving those items designated places.
I go through the entryway every night to clear the space of these items.
Your front entrance is like the home’s energetic gateway, so make it a peaceful one.
2. Give Everything a Home
Every object carries energy, and items with similar purposes harmonize best when stored together.
Creating “homes” for your belongings helps your space feel more organized, grounded and intentional.
As you tidy, simply decide that wherever you place an item is its permanent home.
Put it back in that spot each time, and over time your space begins to feel calm, predictable, and energetically aligned.
The more like items are stored with other like items, the greater their collective harmony is amplified, and the more likely you are to feel this sense of order as peacefulness.
3. Remove Branding From Objects
I first noticed the effect of branding with a tissue box in my bedroom. I’d be trying to fall asleep and this box would yell at me:
“67% MORE TISSUE!”
“NEW! SOOTHING ALOE!”
“THREE TIMES SOFTER!!!”
Branding and marketing messages create energetic noise. In bedrooms and bathrooms especially, that noise can feel loud and disruptive.
Try removing or covering branded labels on items like dish soap, lotions, face wash or cleaning bottles. I started with my makeup kit and taking off the branding felt like I had a little more breathing room in my beauty routine.
Many minimalists love this approach, and I’m here for it as I’ve found it can make a difference.
Your home doesn’t need to feel like an ongoing advertisement; it can feel like your sanctuary.
4. Declutter What Doesn’t Support Your Happiness
We all have items we bought or welcomed into our space, because we once thought would bring joy or be useful, but it now no longer serves a purpose.
These “dead” items - items that aren’t being used, loved or enjoyed add stagnant energy to a space. They can make a space feel dull, lifeless or stuffy.
Relinquishing these items through gifting, donating, discarding or selling them, can release this stagnant energy, inviting more flowing, harmonizing energy into your space.
You don’t have to keep the remains of every past attempt at happiness.
Releasing items that no longer serve you frees up space, literally and energetically, for things that do bring you peace and joy, plus add function.
5. Add Joy-Boosting Decor
Some decor items naturally uplift the energy of a room. Think candles, crystals, plants or even seasonal pieces.
As you clean or move through your home, pause and gently ask the space:
Is there anything that would bring more joy here?
Notice what comes to mind. When budget and timing allows, add that cozy, joyful touch - even something small. These joy boosters act as reminders of your intention to create happiness and harmony in your life.
Be relaxed about how you’re going to source these joyful decor items - you can get them via retail sales or as gifts, gift cards or thrifted treasures.
You don’t need to get all the decor today or right now - choose intentional decor. Really consider the finished space you want to see and then align with pieces that fit this vision.
All in all, creating a peaceful home doesn’t require a full renovation or a massive budget. Small, intentional shifts can transform the energy of your space and in turn, your inner world.
If your home is your sanctuary, it will naturally help you feel more grounded, safe, and at peace.
