What Is Spiritual Wellness? And How Do You Improve It?
In today’s society, I appreciate that inner wellbeing is taking center stage.
Self care is promoted everywhere, mental health is finally getting more attention.
Your overall wellness is made up of many facets - there’s emotional wellness, mental wellness, physical wellness and also spiritual wellness.
Spiritual wellness involves you feeling a connection to something greater than yourself, a feeling of connection to your authentic self, a sense of a higher purpose and meaning in life, plus a set of beliefs and values that guide your actions.
My favorite part of spiritual wellness is it involves a sense of peace, harmony and contentment with everything around you. It can increase your feelings of self esteem and confidence, because it creates a positive, healthy relationship with your inner self.
You may have already experienced glimmers of your own spiritual wellness shining through - have you ever felt content for no reason? Experienced a sense of total peacefulness wash over you?
Felt that, even for a moment, you were content with where things were and that you were exactly where you needed to be?
These are all signs of spiritual wellness.
Signs and examples of spiritual wellness include:
You’ve developed and cultivated a sense of purpose in life
You spend reflective time alone to connect with your inner being, purpose and Spiritual Source
You can explain why you believe what you believe
You regularly practice forgiveness, mercy and compassion
You care for yourself and act out of the welfare for others plus the environment
You can accept yourself and those around you as they are
You have a connection to your inner compass and act from this place
You’ve cultivated positive, supportive relationships that honor your authentic self
You feel a sense of grounded connection to yourself and others
You do not need outside experiences to be perfect in order to feel inner peace
You intentionally cultivate feelings of wellbeing through meditation, prayer, affirmations and mindfulness techniques
Spiritual wellness is defined as connecting your inner spiritual beliefs with your outer world. When you have a strong sense of spiritual wellness, you intentionally align your inner spiritual values with your lived experience.
Spiritual wellness is a harmony; alignment and balance between your inner and outer selves. Having spiritual wellness, in general, creates a positive, all permeating sense of peace and personal wellbeing.
With spiritual wellness, you are operating from a space of alignment - this creates a resonant vibration of peacefulness and contentment.
Why does spiritual wellness matter?
Spiritual wellness matters because when you attain it, you have made peace with life. Obstacles become opportunities. Setbacks become reasons to level up. Rejection becomes redirection to your calling.
You’re able to see the Divine in all things.
Making peace with life helps you be more flexible, adaptable and more resilient to what life hands you.
Flexibility, adaptability and resilience can help you have better relationships and achieve your goals faster because you’re better able to accept what is, move with it and go with the flow.
Spiritual wellness also encourages you to accept the idea of alignment, which is a law of attraction principle.
When you are aligned, your inner values match your outer actions.
You create using the thoughts, beliefs and values that your spiritual connection has called you to form, which, in turn, can create a positivity loop that helps physical things that match those ideas to materialize.
Meaning, your dreams can manifest quickly.
You can improve your spiritual wellness by:
Daily meditation and/or prayer
Most of the time, cultivating spiritual wellness involves embracing some time to be in silence and solitude so you can connect with yourself, your purpose, the meaning of life and all that is.
In the morning and before bed, use your quiet time to set an intention for the day or bless something that happened earlier that day. Call in your favored Divine Presence and your Higher Self.
To start now, inhale and exhale, ask your Spiritual Support Team (use the names you have for this energy) to be with you and for your Higher Self to come forward. Breathe in this energy.
I now call in my Highest Self, support from the loving consciousness around me and my Spiritual Team.
Set a positive intention for the rest of the day like, “I will bless everyone I meet today with peace and love.”
That is one of my favorites but you can choose any that you like.
Engage in acts of kindness, compassion and mercy
Start by turning inward. The first step of outward compassion is inner compassion. Say loving words and thoughts to yourself. Remember that you are here for a reason and you are loved.
Repeat after me:
I deserve happiness. I deserve peace. I deserve loving kindness.
Now think of one thing you can do to support another’s wellbeing - trust the first thing that comes to mind. Go do it. The rest of this article will be here when you get back.
Spend some time in nature
Even if you live in the city, you can do this.
Take a few minutes and step outside.
Mentally notice and internally appreciate things that you like - a fallen leaf, a bird or insect song, a flower, the breeze, the sunshine. Come back inside when your mood has shifted upward.
Reflect on your personal, spiritual values
Contemplate a few of the positive, spiritual values your faith has taught you over the years.
Maybe there are some uplifting teachings that particularly impacted you.
Now hold one of those comforting teachings in your mind. See if you can find a way to align your actions to that teaching today.
Adopt an attitude of gratitude
Whether you call it gratitude, gratefulness or appreciation the idea is the same. When you adopt an attitude of gratitude, it squashes fears and helps you notice abundance. It connects you with all that is good in the world.
A few of my favorite gratitude practices:
Look around you and notice five things you’re grateful for.
In the morning, before you get out of bed, mentally inventory everything you can think of to be grateful for.
A gratitude list - keep a running note of everything you’re grateful for in your phone and add to it whenever more things to be grateful for appear.
Anytime negative thoughts creep in - replace them with gratitude thoughts by asking, what is the potential opportunity in this? That way you’re looking for silver linings and open doors in everything.
What I love about an attitude of gratitude is that it can quickly silence any soul-shrinking negative thoughts that are not aligned to your highest self, better judgement and values.
Allowing negative thoughts to persist can also take you out of alignment with your spiritual values - and gratitude is a guaranteed way to get back into alignment.
Seek guidance from spiritual leaders
Learn from others who have a strong sense of connection to their spirituality. Being around people who are deeply spiritual can help you align with your own sense of spiritual wellbeing.
So to end, let’s tune in.
Inhale and exhale. Place a hand on your heart and another on your belly. As you breathe in and out, connect with yourself and ask this question,
What is one thing I can do today to connect with my sense of purpose?
Notice what arises, what you sense, feel or hear internally.
