Wondering how to get a spirit to leave your home? Wondering how to identify or release the Spirit in your home? This article discusses one of the more popular questions on the blog.

Spirits exist everywhere.

Anywhere people have lived, Spirits have lived. You can have spiritual activity in places where you had natural transitions, people experiencing life cycles, and in rural landscapes.

All places people have lived, there will be Spirits, and there will be a history of the Spirits there.

Some Spirits come from a hundred years ago, some are more recent, some float in from nearby properties. Some of them you may know personally.

If you've found this article, and you think you do have a Spirit creating activity in and around your home and property, start by taking a few big deep breaths.

Most of the time, when someone has a Spirit in their home, it's a Spirit they know or a Spirit someone nearby knows.

They could be there to protect you, send you a message, for help crossing over, to get your attention, there are a variety of reasons.

Nine times out of ten, when someone asks me to look into this for them, it's a recently departed, but not always, sometimes it's a Spirit from a nearby grave that protects the land.

Generally, once people learn who the Spirit is, they're typically more okay with whoever the Spirit is and whatever it is they want.

A spirit may be in your home, if you

  1. Recently lost someone

  2. Recently moved into a new home

  3. Recently had a soul transition in the area

  4. Recently had some up shake in energy in your neighborhood or life

  5. Have been doing historical research in your community

The spiritual activity may be someone who has been drummed up from any of these things. Usually, the first person or name that comes to mind is exactly who you have present.

Use the cues the Spirit gives you to identify them - how do they feel, how do they appear, how do they make you feel when present.

All this will tell you who you have and what you are working with.

Pay attention to dreams you have while the energy is around and the things that your kids and neighbors say, again, this is all information about the Spirit you have.

Once you know who it is, then, you'll have some idea if you don't mind if they stay. Some people like their Spirits and want to keep them, or if you'd rather spend your time clearing the land and flushing the energy and getting this Spirit released.

These articles explain how to identify who you have in further detail -

What If They're Spirit Strangers

Spirits can float in off the road, from nearby neighborhoods, and from portals that opened due to astrological influences.

Imagine your house is like a highway diner.

You own and live in this diner, and it's always open, 24-hours a day, and on the side of the highway.

Now imagine that while yes, you own a restaurant, you really would prefer that your family just live there. You don't serve anyone else and really, even though the lights are on. It's on the side of the highway - you're closed.

Technically, you're still open, but only for people you know, like the people who live there — your family.

Did you put a closed sign on the front door of the diner?

Do you have any emblems outside your home that signify the types of spirits welcome there?

These things can help.

In some cultures, these emblems are called hex signs, and they are practical and can be used to attract or detract specific energies. Some people use various light reflectors or hanging ornaments.

When people welcome Light, Loving Spirits into their home, they'll often put up art, crystals, and other friendly statues that signify this.

You can also put up energy signals that say you are closed off to certain types of energy coming in.

If you praise darker energies, some Spirits will see that as an invitation to show up. Even if you are researching that type of energy for work, be more careful, beef up your positive energy signals on your off time.

If you do nothing at all to attract or detract, the collective energy around you or the Spirits floating around may decide for you and come on in.

So below, let's talk about how Spirits welcome themselves in, and how you can guide who is coming into your property, spiritually.

How Spirits Welcome Themselves In

If you spend time watching negative spiritual media, melodramas about spirituality, or even have spiritual art in your home, these can attract specific types of spiritual energy.

If you have people in your home who are interested in certain types of energy masses, even if just for work, this can attract certain Spirits to come in.

Sometimes, in densely populated areas, Spirit people will walk right into a home and make themselves comfortable when no one is paying attention.

From there, they may knock things off walls, stand at the bottom of stairwells and spook people, mess with electrical equipment, and so on.

To keep only friendly Spirits around, you do want to mind your spiritual space by regularly clearing the energy of your home. Also, be aware of when something strange is happening.

Regardless of where your house is, you may live right next to the bustling highway of Spirit.

Do you live near a roadway? A waterway? A large geological fissure? Along a meteorological or weather pathway? Unmarked graves?

Any of these areas are primed for stray Spiritual energies floating around.

Thankfully, you can help to guide the energy of your land by verbally setting boundaries.

You can also do this by sending cues to The Spirit World of what's welcome, by the type of art you have in your home and the type of media you take in.

In vampire lore, it says that to let a Spirit in, you have to open the door or the portal.

Many people do this unconsciously. Additionally, in The Spirit World, there are no doors. Houses get built on active energy sites where the metaphoric door is open before you get there.

Thankfully, you can reset this door, metaphorically or otherwise, at any time.

How to set your Spirit boundaries

Below are a few steps you can use to release and set boundaries with the spiritual energy in your space.

1 - declutter

Everything we own contains an energy signal. The clearer this signal is, the more likely in the future you'll be able to attract the type of spiritual energy you want in the home.

To set your limits with the types of Spirits you want in your home, first, you want to declutter your living space. Removing anything from it that isn't needed to represent you.

You may take a few days to do this. You can go through things and decide if it hasn't been used in a year, if it's sellable, if you still love it, if it can be donated or used up — everything from clothes to books to old skincare items.

2 - list it out

Next, write a list, either mentally or on paper. It's best if on paper. Make this list of the types of Spirits you are alright with having visited you, if any.

If you are okay with your grandmother visiting you, your friend from college now transitioned, God, Archangel Michael, write it down.

Also, write down when and where you are okay with these approved visitations.

If you are not okay with any Spirit around you, write that down.

When we clear Spirits, we want to make sure that the ones you want to continue to be around, such as your Angels can continue to stay.

Finally, to remove or release a Spirit -

3 - desire their release

For the most part, you only need two things.

1. To want the Spirits to leave.

2. The authority to tell them to go.

To get a Spirit to leave, you have to want them to go.

If you want to tell a Spirit to leave, and don't mean it, they'll be able to 'tell' you weren't serious, and stay.

Plus, you'll wonder where they went, and that wondering will bring them back.

It's kind of like wondering about someone, only to have them send you a text message two days later. If you don't want a Spirit to go, they will sense these energy cords and still stay tethered to the land.

Also, know that if you do release a Spirit, this doesn't mean all the excitement has to end. Usually, what it does is only frees up the energy, so the energy you do want can fill up more of the space.

4 - phrase your request as a statement

Tell the Spirit with power in your voice to go. Sometimes I bang on the wall and say stop once.

Whatever you do, say it firmly, out loud.

You may even choose to escort this Spirit to the door. Some people like to leave a tea light by the front door to help them see through the confusion and get outside.

If you think the Spirit in your home is an Earthbound, here's an article that goes over how to start crossing over a Spirit who may still be attached to this plane.

Spirit Communication. How To Set Boundaries with Spirits - What To Do When A Spirit Is In Your Home. Photo of two houses with mountain peaks in the background by Ben Emrick on Unsplash with text overlay.

To recap, to release a Spirit in your home

  • First, it's usually someone you know. Try identifying them.

  • Spirits can come into your home for a variety of reasons, but you can shape the energy over time.

  • If you want them to leave, be very firm.

  • You may need to cross them over to get them to release fully.

If you aren't comfortable communicating with the Spirit, you can send non-verbal cues that you want this type of energy to leave.

You can do this by changing up the art in your house, the type of media you watch, and by clearing your home clutter to send a clearer energy signal of what you hope to attract.

All in all, having Spiritual energy show up tends to add a little spice and excitement to life.

You may even find yourself having conversations with neighbors, members of the historical society, or doing things you always wanted to do but never had the opportunity.

I tend to see these experiences as fun and enlightening.
