The Throat Chakra governs the intuitive ability of clairaudience, beginning with the gift of hearing your own inner voice and, with practice, potentially recognizing messages from Source or Spirit.

You need this chakra open and flowing to share intuitive messages and messages from Source Energy with clarity; including the messages you receive from your own Higher Self.

An open Throat Chakra can also support discernment around when to and, equally importantly, when not to share intuitive messages.

That distinction can be key to developing your intuitive abilities while maintaining a safe energetic space around yourself.

I first focused consciously on opening my Throat Chakra more than 10 years ago, when I was beginning to explore my own intuitive development.

Since then, I've found this chakra to be an important part of learning how to both receive and communicate intuitive information.

What is the Throat Chakra?

The Throat Chakra is the 5th Chakra, also known as Viśuddha, or "the purifier" in Sanskrit.

Its energetic center is located around the middle of the neck, above the collarbone and below the chin.

The Throat Chakra is part of the larger energetic system known as the Chakra System.

Within this system, there are seven primary chakras located throughout the body, each traditionally associated with different energetic, emotional and spiritual functions.

Here are their approximate locations:

Chakra | Approximate Body Location

Crown Chakra | Top of the head

Third Eye Chakra | Between the eyebrows

Throat Chakra | Center of the neck

Heart Chakra | Around the physical heart

Solar Plexus Chakra | Upper abdomen

Sacral Chakra | Below the belly button

Root Chakra | Center of the pelvic floor

The Throat Chakra is traditionally associated with communication, listening, self-expression and truth.

From an intuitive perspective, it is also closely connected with clairaudience - the ability to receive information through an intuitive sense of hearing.

What does the Throat Chakra govern?

Your Throat Chakra is associated with clear speaking and listening abilities.

In my work with the chakra system, I think of it as creating space for you to both hear and be heard.

The Throat Chakra can support:

  • Clairaudience

  • Clear communication

  • Sharing your truth

  • Self-expression

  • Listening

  • Discernment

  • Creating energetic space

  • Freedom of expression

  • Receiving intuitive messages

It is also associated with purification, freedom and protection.

This is why opening your Throat Chakra isn't simply about talking more.

It's about becoming more aware of what you hear internally, what you choose to communicate and how you communicate it.

The Throat Chakra and Clairaudience

Clairaudience literally refers to "clear hearing."

For some people, clairaudient information may arrive as a word or phrase that seems to come into the mind unexpectedly.

For others, it may feel like hearing their own inner voice more clearly during meditation, prayer or another intuitive practice.

The first place I recommend beginning is practicing hearing your own inner voice.

Before trying to hear messages from Source or Spirit, or psychic messages from others, it’s crucial to become familiar with how your own intuitive voice communicates with you.

If you don’t make space to hear your own soul’s message, there is no inner space to hear outside intuitive messages either.

During meditation, ask yourself a simple question and then listen to what comes and consider this:

What does the answer feel like? Does it arrive as a word? A sentence? A distinct thought? A feeling accompanied by words? Or perhaps something else entirely?

Over time, and with practice, you’ll begin to understand how your inner voice speaks to you.

Clairaudient information can feel different from everyday internal dialogue, worried thoughts, or your average running to-do list.

It may be shorter, clearer or more direct. I feel like it is calm and crisp for most people. It’s often lucid and cuts through the noise.

This doesn't mean that every clear thought is necessarily a message from the Spirit World or your Highest Self.

Discernment is part of intuitive development.

The Color of the Throat Chakra: Blue

The Throat Chakra is represented by the color blue.

When working with your Throat Chakra, you may notice blue light during meditation, in dreams, in your mind's eye or around the energy fields of living beings.

Within this spiritual framework, blue can symbolize a Throat Chakra that is becoming more open and flowing.

Blue is also associated with communication, calmness, balance, quiet, spiritual understanding and higher ideals.

You can incorporate blue into your practice very simply.

Try wearing blue clothing, blue jewelry, keeping blue artwork in your workspace or setting your phone background to blue.

You can also work with blue crystals.

Some of my favorite Throat Chakra Crystals include:

The first Throat Chakra opening crystal I consciously used was a blue agate geode wire-wrapped pendant that I still wear from time to time.

Of the list above, the one I wear and use a lot right now is Larimar, simply because I have an abundance of it.

Archangels and the Throat Chakra

Within my spiritual practice, Archangel Michael and Archangel Gabriel are both associated with communication and the blue ray of energy.

Gabriel is traditionally connected with communication and can be worked with when you're asking for support in expressing yourself or opening to inspiration.

Michael is associated with truth, boundaries, protection and speaking up for yourself and others.

If working with Angels is part of your practice, experiment with calling on Michael or Gabriel during meditation and noticing what you experience.

You don't need to force a particular sensation or message. Simply create the space to listen.

3 ways to open your Throat Chakra

1. Visualize your Throat Chakra opening

Relax your eyes and imagine a series of small pendulums hanging throughout the area of your throat.

Imagine them moving gently back and forth, like the individual pendulums of a Newton's Cradle.

As each pendulum moves, imagine it gently encouraging the next one to move.

Visualize this movement loosening stagnant energy and creating more space throughout your Throat Chakra.

As you visualize, imagine your ability to hear and be heard becoming clearer.

You may also notice a physical sensation around your throat or neck as you focus your attention there.

2. Work with the Throat Chakra seed sound

The seed sound or mantra traditionally associated with the Throat Chakra is HAM, sometimes represented or pronounced as a humming "hum" sound.

Try chanting the sound.

You can also repeat it internally while you're doing an ordinary, repetitive task such as cleaning, walking or getting ready for the day.

Notice the vibration around your throat.

You don't need to make anything happen. Simply allow the sound to become a point of focus.

You can also listen to a soothing Throat Chakra seed sound chant while meditating or relaxing.

3. Practice speaking and listening to your truth

Opening your Throat Chakra isn't about saying everything you think.

It's about developing the discernment to recognize what is yours to say, when it is yours to say it and how you want to say it.

Try asking yourself:

What truth am I ready to express? What have I been afraid to say? Is this the right time to speak? Would listening serve me better right now?

You might discover that opening this chakra creates just as much space for silence and listening as it does for speaking.

Throat Chakra affirmations

Affirmations can be another simple way to focus your attention on this energy center.

A few of my favorites are:

  • I hear my inner voice clearly.

  • I know when it is my time to speak.

  • I listen to Divine Guidance every day.

  • I hear others' messages with crystal clarity.

  • I speak my truth at the right time every time.

Choose one and repeat it during meditation, write it in your journal or keep it somewhere you'll see it throughout the day.

Signs your Throat Chakra may be opening

As you work with your Throat Chakra, you may notice yourself becoming more comfortable speaking in alignment with your authentic self.

You may experience:

  • Greater freedom in self-expression

  • Less hesitation around sharing your thoughts or expertise

  • More awareness of your inner voice

  • Greater clarity during meditation

  • Increased sensitivity to intuitive or clairaudient impressions

  • More confidence communicating your needs

  • Better listening skills

  • Greater discernment about what to say and when to say it

You may also notice blue imagery, light or energy during meditation or intuitive experiences.

Within the chakra framework, these experiences can be viewed as signs of energy moving through or becoming more balanced in this area.

Go deeper with a Throat Chakra Meditation

Opening your Throat Chakra is not something you have to force.

Instead, think of it as creating space to listen.

Space to hear your own inner voice, recognize intuitive impressions, and communicate your truth. And space to become more discerning about what you receive and what you choose to share.

If you'd like guided support as you explore this work, I've created chakra meditations inside The Member Center specifically to give you a place to slow down, focus your attention and work intentionally with the chakra system.

You can use the meditations on their own or alongside the exercises in this article as you explore your intuitive development.
