How to Sage: The 6 Steps To Effective Space Clearing
When I space clear a house, I always try to keep in mind that it’s like cleaning any house.
All houses are different and each situation requires different attention, depending on who or what needs to be cleared and where.
You couldn’t use Windex to clean every spill in the physical world, and likewise, you couldn't use sage to spiritually clean every house in the spiritual and energetic world.
White sage is an excellent tool for space clearing, but it’s just that - a tool. It’s an all-purpose cleaning product that does a wonderful job when it can, but it does have limitations.
White sage is an effective tool for clearing lingering low energy.
It’s great for dealing with heavy, low, lingering thoughts, emotions or feelings - such as those that have been built up over time from arguments, human interactions or the previous interactions of the deceased.
But if you have a Spirit individual in your space, White Sage doesn’t always work for that.
To get a person to leave, you usually have to directly address them.
Many of them need a direct address to leave the space. They either need a command, such as,
“All no longer Spirits that are in this space, I ask you to go - including the person who made my bedroom door close last night.”
Or, they need to hear the intention that you set before you begin space clearing.
Meaning, they need to know it’s them you want them to leave. And sometimes they also need you to give them a place (or direct them to a place) to go when they do leave. In many cases, this means a Divine Light channel, sometimes, it just means, straight out the front door.
So, to fully clear your space, you need at least two tools:
If it's residual energy that is lingering (and not a Spirit) in the space, I use sage to clear space to drop out any residual energy I don't want around anymore and to reduce the risk that I'm going to draw anything additional in.
If it's a Spirit in the space, I just use divine light.
From there, here is my step-by-step space clearing process:
6 Basic Steps to Space Clearing
All situations, places, and scenarios are different, so please keep in mind this is a basic process that is adapted and altered in each and every case.
1. Tune in
Tune in, and ask to see what is going on in the house. Here, see if you can get a sense for what needs to be cleared, where or if there are areas of specific focus for the clearing.
2. Use clearing tools judiciously
Depending on who or what is there, you choose your preferred space clearing tools. Generally, I select Sage or Cedar for residual energies, and Divine Light for Spirit individuals that are around. But, these are just two tools of many!
3. Clear each space with the tool of your choice
From here, walk from room to room to clear the space, while stating your intention or request.
4. Release Spirits (if necessary)
Cross over any Spirits that need to go into the Light and tell anything Dark to leave. I have an eBook on how to do this here.
5. Final clearing and release
After that - I generally call Divine Light down through the entire space and conduct a special power wash through the space. Once done, I open all the windows to let out the energy or Spirits that need to leave the structure at this time.
6. Call in positive, loving Spirits
Depending on who owns the house and the space, at the end, I'll burn sweet grass and welcome in the Spirit Guides, Angels, Loved Ones and any Earth Spirits of the area to assist in naturally clearing and protecting the house after the ritual is complete.
This is the basic, yet flexible, outline for a small space clearing process.
I include Sage in my process, but it is not necessarily a mandatory need to get the job done. Some people like to use essential oils instead.
