How To Become A Psychic Medium
Most people find out they have mediumship abilities by complete accident.
Some, like me, have had the ability to see and hear Spirits since childhood.
I never knew it was called anything other than what I called it as a child, which was, “a nightmare you have when you are awake”.
It wasn’t until later in my own life, when I met with my very first medium, that she pointed out to me that my “awake nightmares” that I was still having as a full grown adult, by the way, were mediumship abilities. . . . and a light bulb went off. More like the breaking of a dam wall, actually.
All my memories, experiences, emotions and fears from childhood came flooding in and rushing back. I freaked out about the possibility of being a medium for at least a year as I recounted all of my life experiences. Meanwhile, I continued to have intense spiritual experiences.
Nothing had changed after meeting with that medium - my experiences of seeing, hearing and sensing spirit were the complete same. The only thing that changed was the label. I freaked out because of the label and I needed time to come to terms with it. And a label is all it is.
Becoming a psychic medium means you open your sensitivities to Spirit.
It means you can pick up on the energy of a Spirit in the room, it means you might have endless voices in your head (this can change with boundaries and practice on toning it down) and it means you might see Spirits with your eyes closed when you try to go to sleep. It means you might wake up in the night to a presence at the foot of your bed. It means you might hear noises in your kitchen when you are home alone. It means all of these things and more.
Thankfully, it also means you have the capability to take your experiences and turn them into usable traits and abilities to offer to others - should you choose to become a medium.
Becoming a professional psychic medium is practicing and honing those sensitivities to help others.
This is a process that continues every day for each medium.
Do you have to see and hear Spirits since childhood to be a natural medium? NO WAY.
If you just started having these experiences today, it means that is your life path, it doesn’t mean you are less talented or have weaker abilities than any other medium.
While, some people see and hear Spirit since childhood, mediumship and medium abilities can make themselves known to you at any time.
And, the most opportune time for your skills to become noticeable to you is when you are most open to your abilities and gifts.
the most common times medium abilities begin to show themselves:
After a close friend or family member has made the transition called death
If you’ve been meeting and spending time with other sensitives
When you are exploring yourself spirituality and expressing interest in the intuitive realms
When you are spending a lot of time alone such as in solitary job professions, after the birth of a newborn child or during intense times of meditation
During natural periods of life reflection and introspection in your late teens, late twenties and fifties.
Feeling like you have mediumship abilities?
Step 1. Understand it.
Read as much as you can about mediumship and intuition. There are plenty of resources on this blog and I’ve also created this handy reading list. The more you know about mediumship, the less intimidating it will seem and the more attainable ‘becoming a medium’ will feel to you. It will also help to have an educated knowledge base when explaining your abilities to family and friends.

Step 2. Practice.
Meet with someone for one-on-one help and it’s best that this person is another medium who can relate to you and help you understand your abilities. Get a reading. Then, take some classes. Meet your gatekeeper guide. While psychic development is essential for mediumship development, eventually, you’ll want to meet up with other mediums. There's a difference between using psychic abilities and mediumship.
There are classes, development groups and even summer camps for mediums through the National Association of Spiritualist Churches. Many mediums also offer development classes and events. There’s an international college for mediumship, believe it or not, as well.

3. Be Gentle on Yourself
Everyone develops at different rates and there are many different ways that mediumship can manifest. In fact, there are 6 main ways to manifest mediumship, and from there, your abilities can be of service to others in a vast array of ways. You can write books, teach, blog, work with paranormal groups, perform readings, have a radio show, be on TV, clear houses, heal others and so much more! If you want to be a medium and use your abilities to be of service to others or simply come to terms with your own experiences, it’s important to that you think long and hard about the decision to do so. It’s not necessary to freak out for an entire year like I did, but becoming a professional medium is a life-long journey, and to do so, you often walk away from things, people, jobs and experiences that are not compatible with the acceptance of your abilities.
You can always choose to “quit” mediumship at any time, but for many, once the doorway to the Light is opened - it never, ever closes. It becomes part of the very thread of who you are at the core of your being and beliefs ~ perhaps because it always was, at some level.
Often, I choose my allegiance to love, truth and Spirit above all else - which can create conflict, especially for those in your life who may not accept it.
As a medium, Spirits and the world of Spirit will be a regular part of your life, even with the best boundaries and protection amulets.
Don’t become a medium for the money.
If you are called to it, know that mediumship is a work of the heart and as such, it is borne out of love and compassion. You can make a living on mediumship, but more importantly, you spend more time living in the love of Spirit.
For myself, being a medium was and is beautiful life choice. And looking back, despite all I’ve walked away from to do so, I would make again in a heartbeat. It’s definitely not for everyone, but please read more about my thoughts on my life as a medium here.
If you have any questions about mediumship or concerns, please let me know, consider booking a private session, registering for a class, and, if your question is frequently asked, I’m happy to post it in a blog!
With love on your journey,
