Today we’re going to be discussing the spiritual meaning of raccoons.

Raccoons are one of my favorite mammals by far - I enjoy their presence, hearing their chittering and discussions at night, and love to see them waddling around in the back yard.

While you could say that seeing the presence of a certain mammal is simply that animal doing its thing - foraging for food, taking care of its survival and life responsibilities - I believe that animals can be attracted to our energy fields as well.

When you see a certain animal, I believe sometimes it is not an accident.

Perhaps they’re your Spirit Animal.

Or perhaps they felt something in your aura and were comfortable around you. Perhaps it is the law of attraction at play. Perhaps even, that animal is also guided by a Divine Purpose and Plan, which draws your paths together.

So if you have been seeing raccoons in your life, in your dreams, or even if the Raccoon has been popping up in your mind’s eye and thoughts, it's at least fun to think about the deeper, spiritual meaning of the raccoon.

If the raccoon was your Spirit Animal, which of the below messages do you think it is trying to impart to you?

5 Symbolic Messages of a Raccoon Spirit Animal

1 - Be Opportunistic

Raccoons are adept at survival in any ecosystem, urban, suburban, rural and everywhere in between. Part of the reason for this is that they are opportunistic eaters. They will eat essentially whatever is quickest and readily available.

Oftentimes, to survive, you have to be resourceful, opportunistic and able to make anything work.

The spiritual message of the raccoon could be that, in a pinch, you can use your resources to tap into the most readily available opportunities.

Sometimes what we need may be the quickest, easiest and closest thing available. So yes, grab the low hanging fruit.

2 - Explore Your Facades To Become Something New

One of the iconic aspects of the raccoon is their black eye mask.

While this mask is all about absorbing sunlight and better vision, consider the many other reasons for masking.

As humans, mask making culture exists around the world - we make masks for parties, rituals, ceremonies and just for fun.

Once behind a mask, a person can become someone or something else.

This can be a good thing because the masks help us to transform into other aspects of our personality.

The raccoon reminds us that we all have facades that we use, and that no one is exactly as they seem.

Think about what masks or facades you use in daily life. You can use your own personal masks to transform into someone or something new.

3 - Go on a Mini Adventure

Like all Spirit Animals, raccoons can enter our life to teach us something, and in this case, a potential message of the raccoon may be to explore.

Raccoons are very adventurous and can cover a lot of ground during their night time foraging.

Perhaps it is time to get curious and start exploring new territory.

You can be mindful - you don’t have to cover all the new ground today, but perhaps looking around at a couple new places could be useful.

You could find just what you’re looking for.

4 - Embrace Adaptable Boundaries

In the wild, raccoons watch closely before deciding to retreat, ignore or defend.

They’ll pause before deciding what to do. When defending themselves they’ll vocalize and change their posture to give clear warnings.

Raccoons may tolerate closeness with humans and other raccoons in one setting, and resist it in other settings.

In a spiritual sense, this can help teach us that it’s okay to adapt your boundaries for the situation at hand, and to release rigid rules as to when to interact, engage or defend yourself.

Let each circumstance help you decide how to respond.

When it comes to closeness and separation with others, what may have worked at one time, may not be what is necessary today.

5 - Consider Your True Needs

As mentioned above, raccoons are incredibly opportunistic, which is why they can be found even in the most dense urban environments.

In addition to eating anything that’s available, they are very resourceful. They’ll make their homes in essentially any ecosystem, and they’re incredibly dexterous - using their hands to forage for everything they need.

They’re also very intelligent and clever. They can solve problems and get into resource caches other animals cannot.

Because of their willingness to live anywhere and eat anything, plus their determination to figure things out, they can find what they need to survive anywhere.

Think about one time where you thought you needed some far-flung resource, and you ended up finding the solution right at home instead.

The raccoon’s message may be that as long as you have your basic needs met, consider that you have everything you need.

As a mammal, all you really need is air, food, water and shelter. Once these things are taken care of, feeling safe and loved are perhaps the next needs.

But after that, from a shamanistic standpoint, the other things are more like wants.

All in all, the message of the raccoon is to be more opportunistic, be adaptable with social boundaries, explore your personal masks to transform into something new, go on a small adventure and consider your true needs for life satisfaction.
