How to see an aura (and Why You’d Want To)
An aura is the energetic body of the human spirit.
It’s visible to the naked, human eye, if you know how to look for it.
Anything that is composed of molecules has an electric field. Even if the charge of this electric field if neutral (undetectable), the electric field can become activated/charged with movement and change in the area of the person, object, plant or animal.
Seeing someone’s aura can be beneficial in so many ways.
Many people already sense the energy of someone before they see it, so if you can identify someone’s “vibe” you can train your vision to see an aura - which is just the charge field around a person’s body.
And the charge field of a person’s body changes from day to day, and throughout season’s of their life so while some people argue we all have a home energy color, keep in mind that what you see one day in someone’s field, may fade out the next - in other words, auras are not static.
Although, each person does has clear, underlying energy, much of which can be identified as a color or a series thereof. This is the aura.
To see an aura, it's merely a matter of training your eyes to look for the subtle energy of this field, around something or someone.
How To See An Aura
Step 1. Identify a potential subject(s) to practice on.
When looking for an aura, you are looking for the visually subtle electric field of something.
If that something is an active being, moving, changing, growing, and shifting forms, it will be much easier to see it’s electric field - it’s aura because it'll be more vibrant.
For best results, you want to choose a subject that has an active, energetic system such as:
A living houseplant
These are all excellent subjects to practice on.
However, in this exercise, we are going to use you as the subject.
Step 2. Dim the lights
Subtle energy is most natural to see when your senses are not already overtaxed. When the lights are too bright, with a television on that is too loud, or with thoughts in your mind that are too active - it’s hard for any other sensory cue to get in and get noticed.
So you have to dim things down to sense a spirit or a person's, or living things energy field.
Since we are practicing using our eyes to see an aura, and in turn our clairvoyance, we want to limit any distracting sensory exposure coming into through the visual cortex.
So to see auras, try dimming the lights.
Step 3. Get a hand-held mirror
For this exercise, you are going to be looking at yourself in the mirror to practice seeing the outline of your spirit - your aura.
Place a mirror across from you at a comfortable distance of at least one foot, arm's length, and up to ten feet away. Make sure that your upper body, at least from your chest, shoulders and head upwards is visible in the mirror.
Step 4. Sit down and get comfortable
Once you’ve dimmed the lights, gather any meditative supplies that you need, blankets, candles, pillows, incense. Anything. Then find a comfortable place to sit for a short period.
Step 5. Now relax your vision
Take a moment to relax your eyes. I have another blog on this where I talk about shifting and widening your gaze making it easier to see subtle energy/spirit, which often looks very similar to a heat wave.
Do not strain your vision, practice gazing upon the room you are in and the objects in it.
Focus on an object on the room, and then release your focus into a gaze. Stare at a book in the bookcase, try to read the words. Then, release your vision into a full wide focus gaze, not looking at anything in particular, just at the whole room. Focus on something, then release. Focus, then release. Try this 3x. This calibrates your eyes.
Step 6. Gaze into the mirror
On your final release, move your gaze into the mirror to look at yourself. Gaze with now a full relaxed vision in the mirror.
Practice for as long as you can hold the gaze or until you start to see a halo around your shoulders, head or crown. This is even better done when you are standing against a beige or ivory colored wall.
Your aura, when you start to see one, can look like:
A clear halo
The fuzzy air around your body
Translucent colors near your head
Fading out down the rest of your body
An inconsistent border, 2-3 inches around your body
If you have to release your gaze and look away, even after just a few minutes, take a break and try again.
Generally, it can take between 5-10 separate attempts at this mirror gazing technique start seeing an aura, so give it some time.
Looking for an aura requires skills a lot like those needed looking for a “Magic Eye.” These were books that were published in the 1990s that were visual training games using mental puzzles, many are still available today on Amazon and through other retailers. I often recommend them for those who are practicing switching their clairvoyant muscles on and off when needed. It’s really fun to do in nature, especially around the time of the Golden Hour.
It can take a while to get it - but once you got it, you got it, and then you'll be able to do this same gaze when looking at others auras.
You may not be able to see everyone’s aura. You also may not want to see into everyone’s aura. Please keep in mind that not everyone has learned how to reign in and focus their aura, meaning, that for some, their energy will appear diffuse everywhere, and for others, you'll see more of a clear line.
People also tend to expand out their aura at home, and pull it in when in unfamiliar places, so it may be easier to see a clear aura around those when they're outside of their comfort zones and in different energy. Most people have really beautiful auras. Some just get clouded up with other dust from time to time. This can be cleared, check out the eBook Spiritual Security in the online store, or the Space Clearing eBook in The Membership Center.
The main reason why you’d want to see someone’s aura is for fun and to check their intention. If you’re a healer and on the professional level, you might want to see into a person’s energy field to see what needs to be healed or where the injuries are on the energetic level. Most therapists, coaches and psychologists can do this innately.

PS - If you see a translucent aura, this is normal! It is the collection of all colors. However, if you see a rainbow aura, this is a big sign the person is a healer. Artists often have violet auras and singers or speakers will usually have vibrant blue auras. Like I said above, the color changes though, and it can even change as your spirit guides change guard throughout your life, or as you change careers.
