Astral Travel In Dreams: Can It Be Done?
Updated 2025.08.20
Astral Travel (AT) is the act of the soul leaving the body for a temporary period of time to travel to specific places to experience learning and soul growth.
With practice, AT can be done both while you are consciously awake and it can also be done while you are in a dream state.
Many people have astrally traveled in a dream state without realizing it.
This is what an AT dream episode often looks like:
You have a dream where you are meeting with a bunch of people (you may or may not have met them before) and ideas are being shared.
Or you have a dream and you’re travelling to a distant location.
You wake up and feel the dream was extremely vivid to the point where you can actually remember the faces of those present and what was said.
Astral Traveling While Awake
If you are interested in being more actively involved in your soul’s travels throughout the Universe, you can train yourself to astral travel consciously by manually encouraging your soul to leave your body.
Especially in meditations before bed or while laying down.
The best way to begin training yourself to go on conscious soul journeys is by using the practice of a shamanic journey.
An exercise to Astral Travel while awake:
Roll your shoulders back and down. Place your hands palm up on either side of you, and place your knees at hip width apart. Get into a comfortable position.
Inhale and exhale.
Visualize a Pegasus Spirit Guide in front of your soul and sense your Spirit Body leaving your physical body and floating over to ride on top of your Spirit Guide’s back.
Imagine your Pegasus Guide flying off to travel on the psychic highway, the astral plane of consciousness, which looks like a ring of light around the globe.
Visualize yourself flying on this psychic highway, gliding around the globe on this ring of light. Be open to any images, impressions or sensations you receive.
Watch as your Pegasus begins to complete its journey and it comes back to you. Ask for your Pegasus Guide’s name. Thank your Pegasus for taking you to the Astral Plane.
Imagine and sense your soul floating back into your body now.
Astral Traveling While You Sleep
If you have found yourself uncommonly tired, groggy or exhausted - even after a full night’s sleep - it is possible that your soul was traveling while your physical body was in a dream state - especially if you remember having a dream like the one mentioned above.
Often, our full spiritual attention is somewhat limited during the day - because we are focused on other things, like living, eating, working, creating, etc.
Many highly spiritual people do much of their soul work while their body sleeps and this is completely natural.
Thus, if you feel your soul may be leaving your body to learn lessons and meet with other souls at night - this is likely occurring.
Thankfully, you can intentionally call in astral traveling in the dreamspace.
An exercise to Astral Travel in dreams:
As you are laying down to sleep, mentally recount the good parts of your day from the morning until the moment you are in now. Next, mentally notice a few good things about your bed - how comfortable the pillows are, how cozy the blankets are, how much you like your sheets.
Ask your body to begin relaxing - ask that your feet now relax, your knees now relax, to your hips now relax, to your torso now relax, your shoulders now relax, your neck and head now relax.
If you feel called to move around a bit as you get comfortable you should do so.
As you begin to get into the mental and physical space for sleep, ask your Spirit Guides and Angels to surround you.
Ask that as you rest, they take your Spirit to view a historical timeline to gain insights you can use now.
Keep your thoughts positive as you fall asleep.
If they meander or go any other direction than focusing on having a dream of a historical place or the good parts of your day and life, bring your mind back to positive topics you enjoy thinking about - while holding your intention to visit a historical chapter.
When you wake up, record any dreams that you had and meditate on what the meaning has for you now.
So to end, yes, the soul leaving the body in Astral Travel is possible. There are two ways for the soul to leave the body - while awake and while dreaming.
Why Astral Travel? You can connect with ancient wisdom, insights from alternate timelines and connect with cosmic consciousness to answer your soul’s deepest questions.
While awake in meditation or a shamanic journey, you can practice getting the soul to leave the body and return through visualization.
Either way, being aware you are Astral Traveling is a unique experience and whether or not you do or will experience it in this lifetime, largely depends on your own soul’s path.
