The Difference Between Ego, Intuition & Spirit

Updated 2022.01.03

Wondering the difference between ego and the higher self?

The voice of intuition versus the voice of ego can be easy to pull apart, as it is only a matter of identifying what the higher self feels like when it steps in.

You may have already encountered a voice coming from within or from a source other than yourself. This article is about sorting out these voices from the voice of the ego.

This inner voice is gentle and loving and typically the voice of either Spirit or your intuition.

The voice of your Intuition or Spirit can sound like your own, only softer and more loving. It can also be more of a feeling in your stomach or your heart, rather than an actual auditory voice.

The ego voice is typically the one that is over chatters and offers banter.

Some of the voices that come from within your own circling mind, other times, this is truly your Higher Self, your intuition speaking. And in other cases, it's the voice of a Spirit speaking to you.

There are many ways to hear voices.

Start developing your clairaudient abilities and professional practice by starting to take your own inner voice seriously, and the first step is sorting them out.

To start, learn to tell the difference between Ego, Intuition/The Inner Voice, and the Voice of Spirit.

Let’s move through a few of the differences between your ego-mind, your Intuition, and Spirit.

The 3 Types Of Internal Voices

Ego

The ego is the voice of survival, the voice of the physical body, and the voice of the external collective fears combined.

The ego represents the identification with the self in the physical and emotional world.

Ego is present for physical survival purposes, and most of the time, it is the leading voice when we are born into this Earth.

In many cases, your ego roots for you the way a college advisor would. The ego comes in after your own thoughts.

It makes sensible plans, asks you to be watchful and fearful of the external world that may bring you down, and asks you to seek a place of safety.

The voice of the Ego usually speaks over the voice of the Spirit and intuition. It needs to help your Spirit stay on this earth, though it can get out of balance.

When out of balance, the ego can produce circular thoughts, an over-focus on fears and worst-case scenarios, and a desire for validation from other people.

The voice of Ego very rarely speaks to us in dreams or meditation. Most commonly, it dominates the voice that tells you what needs to happen, that you are running late, and your life is ruined and reminds you of the thing you shouldn’t have said last night.

The ego can be helpful, and it can help you stay alive. With practice, the voice of the Ego can be balanced, and the other two voices can be honored and brought to the forefront.

Ego Voices:

  • Come in after flashes of intuitive insight as thought

  • Tend to speak over the other voices

  • May be worry or fear focused when out of balance

  • Can help you stay in your body in the physical

Intuition

The voice of your higher self is usually the voice of your intuition, your internal guiding light, the part of you in Spirit that is connected to the all Source.

This is the eternal you. The greater part of you who knows your path and has been present for all of your lives. Your intuitive voice can speak to you as a feeling in your stomach, in your heart, or a knowingness.

It can speak to you through precognition and vivid dreaming through images and metaphors.

The Higher Self, intuition, usually speaks as a soft whisper coming from within. It is often accompanied by a feeling in the gut or heart.

It’s common to hear your Higher Self whisper as a knowingness on your left side.

The voice of the Higher Self often speaks in dreams and meditation, like the voice of Spirit. However, the voice of the Higher Self can also come suddenly to you in the middle of the day - no matter how busy - to provide immediate insight.

The Higher Self is confident and self-assured.

The voice of your Higher Self is soft like Spirit, and it is also associated with a feeling of inner authority and knowingness, that is different from those in Spirit who are external to you. The voice of intuition is also a firmly persistent source.

This is a voice I like to ask to appear after a clearing meditation.

Intuition/Higher Self Messages:

  • Is usually accompanied by a feeling of inner knowingness

  • Spoken with self-authority

  • Persistent yet gentle

  • Can appear in dreams, or liminal state, in meditations and during the day

Spirit

The voice of Spirit is the voice of your Guides. It can also be any being supporting you in the Light, including God, Archangel Michael, and more.

Spirits can connect with your thoughts, and Spirit Guides and Angels can hear your requests. So it only makes sense that we can, in turn, understand those in Spirit when they reply back to us.

The voice of Spirit could be your Spirit Guides, Angels, or a Deceased Loved One.

Spirit is often quiet and heard from the right side or top of your head. If you have ever heard whispers or noises when no one is around, this could be a sign of Spirit connecting with you.

Inspirational ideas and good plans drop into your mind? There’s a good chance this is a Spirit.

Most of the time, the voice of Spirit is external though some people do get the messages internally.

It usually appears as a voice that sounds slightly different than yours and can be more claircognizant in nature - meaning you get a thought drop rather than a single word.

The voice of Spirit cuts through frenetic energy and can appear as a gentle softness amid a chaotic day.

Calm, kind, and sometimes pushing you forward, the voice of Spirit will not be hasty, cynical, nor putting you down or instilling fear and worry. It can be loud.

The voice of Spirit is often accompanied by a name or the feeling of a third energy present. It can also be accompanied by an image of the spirit speaker present.

The voice of Spirit:

  • Can be external or internal

  • Cuts through the noise of the day

  • Calm and pushing you forward, but can be loud

  • Is often accompanied by a name or a sense of a third energy present

Of these, the voice of Spirit is typically the only one we hear externally. Intuition usually comes from within and Ego often arrives after the first impression.

Now we’ve identified the differences between ego, intuition, and Spirit. Know all of these voices have their place and can be helpful. When pursuing a goal, it’s essential to listen to all three and have all three be in sync.

If you feel at peace, if your mind is calm, if you feel focused, this is a sign, all three voices are in harmony.

The most common voice of the three above to get out of harmony is the voice of Ego, and you can bring this voice back into balance by focusing on activities to reconnect with the Higher Self and Spirit.
