How To Decline A Client Consultation

Updated 2020.10.04

A reading is a sacred connection between you, your client, and Spirit.

And to receive the highest, best and clearest connection possible, everyone coming to the reading has to be aligned to receive.

But there are sometimes boundaries that prevent this clear three-way link:

If anyone of these individuals are not in this mental, emotional or spiritual space for a reading, the messages from the reading may not be delivered clearly, they may not be transferred clearly, and they may not even be received clearly.

If a client is scared, busy, frazzled, doing too many things at once, they may not even hear the messages or be giving the messages time to sink in.

If the practitioner hasn't had time to tend to their classes or other business work, it may be a sign he or she is giving too many readings and not balancing all arms of their business appropriately, which may call for more boundaries with clients.

If the spiritual time isn't right for a reading, it's sometimes necessary to decline invitations for such.

On a client's end, having too many readings can be having too many massages, it's possible.

The body needs time to heal between intensive physical work, and likewise, your mind and spirit need time to process intensive emotional, intellectual or spiritual work and at no time are you under any obligation to give a reading to anyone.

On your end, imagine as a medium or a psychic, instead of having a gift; you own a grocery store full of food.

In this scenario, typically, you’re open from 10 am - 7 pm every day, but recently, you broke your ankle, and now you have limited hours, or you have to hire someone else to run the store, while you focus on other critical matters as you recover.

With a family run business, it’s nearly impossible to have round the clock hours and stand at the register 24/7.

So, unfortunately, you will be unable to be open all of the time to serve your customers. Due to tending to your own needs such as eating, sleeping, resting, and other self and family maintenance tasks.

Thankfully, when a psychic close his or her grocery store, there are other options for your customers:

1. They can wait until the store opens again

2. They can temporarily visit another grocery store

3. They can learn how to get the same information themselves

4. They can hire someone else

Either way, when you turn down someone for reading, you don't deny anyone access to food or a connection to Spirit indefinitely.

Not by a long shot. Each and every person can learn to connect, grow their own food, or find another fit that works for them - everyone can develop their abilities to connect with Spirit.

So, you are never letting anyone down by setting up a boundary and turning away access; in fact, you may even be giving your clients an opportunity to turn inward and use this opportunity to put into practice some of the tools you’ve taught them.

In some cases, declining a client can save the client money and your time and resources, so it’s usually a win-win for all.

When do you decide to say no to a client?

Whenever you feel you can’t serve that customer in your highest capacity possible, such as when:

  • When something feels off

  • When you don’t feel well

  • After you’ve been working all day

  • When it’s time to take a vacation

  • If you are nurturing yourself for a health situation

  • When you are way too tired and exhausted

  • If you aren’t in an emotional space to work, such as during a stressful life event

  • When a customer becomes hostile or unpredictable

  • When a potential customer feels off or somehow not right to you

  • When you feel you can’t provide what they are looking for

  • Anytime you feel you can’t provide your highest and best in the service of Spirit to another, discontinue the reading

  • When your client has had more than 6-8 readings in a row, then it may be time to suggest a counselor or alternative therapies

Essentially, if you can’t sign into the shift for any reason, it’s best to not.

If you've overbooked your sessions, you cancel them at any time, just make sure to write it into your terms and conditions and provide a full refund.

And while you don't have to explain why you are turning down a client, I like to keep it as short, neutral and sweet as possible.

If you do decide to cancel priorly scheduled sessions, I recommend these three steps

  • Empathizing with a client’s needs

  • Keeping it neutral and/or apologize

  • Providing referrals to someone who also provides services, if you can

To end, turning down a client for a reading may help the client rely on their own intuition more and save them a little bit of money, all while giving you time to tend to your own needs and matters, serving the both of you.

If your client has had more than one session in a row over a chain period, it is possible they have an addiction or are simply lonely.
