Oracle Card Decks for Moon Lovers
In November 1824, Sidney Hall, a British Cartographer released Urania's Mirror; or, A View of the Heavens.
This was a set of 32 astronomical star cards. The cover of the box-set showed a depiction of Urania, the muse of astronomy, and it came with a book entitled A Familiar Treatise on Astronomy... written as an accompaniment, which would now be called a guidebook.
These were some of the first star cards available and now there are many more to choose from.
So, Tarot or Oracle, what do you choose?
Tarot is devised on a set system of reading cards and interpretation, and all decks of Tarot are bound by this general system, making these decks great tools for those who already know and have learned the system or would like to.
Oracle Cards, however, are much more flexible in their system stylings as each Oracle Card Deck has their own style of reading option available, your choice or you can choose the styles offered to you by the author of the deck, making them great for learning new styles and methods of interpretation.
I consider each a little class on that person's divination method, providing me with a richer and deeper understanding of my own.
But besides which you choose, according to world divination theory, there are two methods of divination, intangible and tangible, known as ecstatic or inductive.
One is thought of as being used primarily for the viewer, and the other thought of as being used primarily for the self, both, however, can be used together and this is where cards come in, as many readers draw upon both, to provide their final product.
So whichever you prefer, here are a few of the new moon ones that have been released a bit more recently, and I'm currently digging:
The Constellation Tarot
This 78-card tarot deck was created by private-run artist Iryna Semenova and it features the galaxies and constellations. While it is designed as a tarot deck (which is a formalized system of reading, it can also be used as an oracle deck). Comes with guidebook and case. You can find these on etsy.com. Ships from Canada.
The Moon Deck
The Moon Deck is printed on recycled paper with plant-based ink. Crowdfunded by Indiegogo in 2016, this is a 44-card deck that focuses specifically on the wisdom of the moon. Comes with a guidebook and pouch. Case available for additional charge. A mix between an inspirational deck and an oracle, you can find at themoondeck.com.
Compendium of Constellations Oracle Deck
all 88 constellations
This 90-card deck features all 88-constellations plus 2-star clusters. Reading into this deck will require a little bit of astrological and star knowledge, though, as this deck comes without a guidebook. Comes with case. Released in 2017, this deck is currently available from@ blackandthemoon.com. Ships from China.
Spirit de la Lune Deck
This is a 56-card moon themed deck is a joint collaboration between Rachael Caringella of Tree Talker Art and Marissa Moondaughter of Moondaughter. Featuring circular moon-shaped cards and separated into suits, this deck features Full Moondalas, Zodiac Moondalas, and Moon phase cards. This moon themed deck comes with guidebook and case, plus two descriptive cards and a blessing. Released in 2015, this deck is available @ spiritdelalune.com.
The Cosmos Tarot & Oracle Card Deck
two decks in one
This deck features both a full 78-card Tarot Deck and a 22-card Oracle Deck, creating a full 100 set of cards. Created in collaboration with over 100 artists for the Cosmos Exhibition in 2015, this deck features gilded edges, scientific metaphor, element cards, nebulas, and more. Comes complete with guidebook and case. Great for logical folks. Available @ lightgreyartlab.com in second edition print.
Anytime is a great time for stargazing, either with your head looking up or looking down onto your reading table.
People have been divining using the solar system for thousands of years, and if you're just learning this system, as much as it can be intuitive, there is a logic and order to it that even the most esoteric of us can't help but appreciate.
Have a reading deck you're really enjoying lately that's not mentioned here?
