How To Make Your Home More Spiritual

Spirituality is a connection to a source of positive power greater than yourself. It could also imply an awareness of the interconnection of all beings.

Typically, when you have a source of spirituality, it guides your ethics, moralities and views on the best way to live.

It also guides the way you demonstrate reverence for all that is.

When I was growing up, I moved around a lot - I’ve lived in 17 different structures and 7 different states.

Traveling around allowed me the opportunity to see and participate in a lot of different spiritual practices. Nearly every region I visited, a new friend would want to invite me into their spiritual practice.

My mother raised me with the belief that “all rivers lead to the same ocean,” so I was willing to participate in all of it.

I never had the opportunity to view someone’s beliefs as right or wrong, better or worse, because my mother wouldn't allow it - she was always reinforcing that all beliefs could be right and valuable in some way.

This meant I remained open, accepting and judgment-free.

Now after years of studying many forms of spirituality, I’ve learned that a lot of forms of spiritual practice celebrate the same values, they just use different stories and symbols to illuminate what those values are.

When making your home more spiritual, you are essentially making the choice to infuse your spiritual practice into your life - to walk the talk in whatever that spirituality practice is.

You are also infusing your home with positive energies like love, courage, acceptance, appreciation, forgiveness, gratitude and joy.

No matter what form of spirituality you practice, and whichever types of symbols and stories that includes, below are 7 ways to make your home more spiritual -

1 - Do a blessing on your home

You can do this when you leave the house to run errands.

Stand in front of it or sit in your car, and while looking at your home, ask that it be protected in love and light of your {insert higher power HERE}. It can be Angels, Ancestors, Jesus, God, whomever you call the Divine.

Then envision your home being surrounded in Divine Light.

Every once and a while, infuse your home with your favorite scents and walk around the inside of your home with sage, frankincense, smudge mist, a candle or an essential oil diffuser.

Say kind words to the house like,

“Thanks for keeping us safe, thanks for keeping us warm, thanks for still being here for me.”

All homes have distinct energy fields that you can reinforce with positive spiritual words and mantras.

2 - Keep your spiritual views in mind when bringing objects in

Spiritual homes usually feel good to be in. You feel welcomed, at home and able to be yourself. You feel safe.

This is because your spiritual values are infused in everything you do in your home - the way you make food, the way you decorate, and the types of objects you bring inside.

When selecting items to bring in, consult your spiritual values - does this align with what I believe? The types of concepts I want to promote? Does this make me happy?

Reflecting before acquiring will help keep the spiritual vibration of your space aligned with your higher power, which will keep the energy aligned towards the positive.

3 - Add an area of worship

This can be anywhere in your home. Your area of worship is a place where you keep your spiritual things to pray, meditate, or seek guidance.

You place your spiritual books here. You’ll add candles, crystals, special jewelry, inspiration cards, photos, and anything you use to draw upon for spiritual insight.

Gather it all and place it in one spot - a bookcase, secretary desk, counter top. Then use this space to engage with your spiritual practice.

4 - Do energy work on your home

You could call this Reiki, energy healing, saging or even Feng Shui.

Whatever you call it, doing energy work on your home can help lift the overall vibe of your home to align to your spiritual values.

Feng Shui is the best framework I’ve found to align home energy flow, or the way spiritual forces move through your space.

It can serve as a foundation for a deeper understanding of how spiritual forces can effortlessly move through your space so you can passively add their influence to it.

5 - Add beneficial spiritual symbols

Think about your spiritual beliefs. What are some positive symbols that are associated with those beliefs?

Add these to your space in the form of art or sculpture. These symbols can serve as a reminder of your spiritual practice at work in your life.

6 - Infuse your spiritual beliefs into your home administration tasks

You have to do some amount of home administration work to keep the ship afloat. This could be interacting with and choosing vendors for utilities, groceries and maintenance.

It could be managing the schedules of the people in the home.

Choose a few of your favorite spiritual principles to guide your day. Take a moment to consider the actions you need to perform today, is there a way you could do them that better aligns with these beliefs?

For years, I worked with the 5 Reiki Principles and then later, the 4 Agreements. Now, I usually do something like, “choose to see everyone in the eyes of Spirit.”

7 - Keep your home clutter free

Consider tidying your home. Tidying your home can help you identify and hone in on what makes you happiest and what matters most to you.

Clutter is also thought to create stress and tension. It puts the mind in overdrive. The goal of a spiritual home is that it helps you cultivate a peaceful mind, so removing clutter can create a more spiritual space.
