Are you looking for books to read for communicating with spirits? Books on mediumship or for mediums? Mediumship development books?
In this post, we go over guides I love, and just as an FYI, this article contains affiliate links to a few of my favorite products.
As much as first-hand experience in the field is priceless when dealing with the Spirit World, knowing what to expect, different ways to practice can be helpful.
The below texts are the ones I recommend the most, time and time again to new and advanced spirit communicators alike -

1. Spirit Releasement Therapy: A Technique Manual
The classic textbook on depossession. I can't remember how I found it, but it's by William J Baldwin Ph.D., who is a psychologist. He treats patients, and when nothing else worked, he figured, why not try depossession.
The book itself has an interesting backstory.
To his surprise, depossession worked in many of his untreatable clients for previously believed Diagnostic and Statistical Mental Disorders.
After testing and testing, he figured out a system for what he calls successful releasement and happier patients.
Spirit Releasement Therapy is a handbook of what Baldwin has seen work and what doesn't. It includes activities to perform his most successful procedures yourself, which are mostly guided meditations.
It's also fascinating to hear his theories on positive and negative energy, which is so much like what you hear out there today in the spiritual community.
Whether you are a psychology major turned psychic, or want to know how to talk to and release earthbound spirits, this book is a must-have.
2. Mediumship Mastery: The Ultimate Guide
An excellent guidebook if you want concentrated activities to improve your mediumship and clair-senses. It includes activities from Spiritualism Groups around the world, and also fundamental processes and practices.
The author of this book, Reverend Stephan Hermann, has taught classes for the International Spiritualist Federation in the UK.
I like this one if you lead a mediumship development group or if you are teaching mediumship or psychic development classes because it is just chock-full of activities.
3. Mediumship Made Simple: A Step-by-Step Guide To Communicating With Spirits
One of the first mediumship books I owned, this is a guide that I recommend side-by-side Where Two Worlds Meet, the Janet Nohavec classic.
It's simple to understand, makes sense, and gives the process an easy and comforting feel. Like Mediumship Mastery above, it also includes lots of simple activities and prompts.
One of the things I like about this book is that it does go slightly beyond mediumship and moves into symbols for others, ethics, and manifestation and attraction theory.
With these additional activities, the reader, you, is inspired to go forward in your spiritual journey with some avenues presented of where to look next.
4. Exploring Auras: Cleansing and Strengthening Your Energy Field
Susan G. Shumsky's Exploring Auras book from 2006 is one of the only books in my collection that I have dog-eared pages. When working with spirits, it's essential to know the basics of how energy works, starting with your energy field and then expanding from there.
I recommend this book time and time again for those interested in doing any energy work from mediumship, psychic readings, and even those looking at how to heal their energy field.
This book goes over the basics of energy, the essential root work needed for mediumship. Once you have this covered, you can expand upon it and apply it to your spiritual work for even more focused and rewarding results. For those looking to get the groundwork ‘right,’ I like this book a lot.
5. The Unquiet Dead: A Psychologist Treats Spirit Possession
Dr. Edith Fiore first published this book in 1987, and I'm confident it inspired at least a few possession movies.
If you want to rid yourself of unwanted spirits or become convinced the job sometimes needs to be done, this book is the manual.
To me, Unquiet Dead is a mini version of the Spirit Releasement Therapy Manual mentioned above, which Edith wrote the forward for.
The Unquiet Dead discusses essential techniques on how to protect yourself from entities, for releasing your home from displaced spirits, and overall, how to perform a depossession.
I like this book because it explains the risk sometimes involved in identifying and working with energies, which the majority of spiritual books gloss over. It adds weight to the study of spirit communication and helps include humility in the process.
6. The Dictionary of Angels: Including The Fallen Angels
I keep this one next to my desk most days. If you like history, and the backstories behind the symbolic names of Gods, Angels, and other heroes, you'll love having this reference guide.
Knowing every Spirit's name and symbolism by heart takes time, but with this guide, you'll begin to learn and recognize at least some of the names.
You can use it when meditating on Angels and seeing what name comes to you. Then use this fantastic guide to look it up and validate your first-hand experience.
