The practice of burning incense for fragrance has been around just about as long as the burning of plant materials for spiritual, energetic, or aromatic reasons.
I get asked quite a lot about the tools that I use in my practice and daily life, from what I use for psychic protection to the way that I prepare for a session.
Just like you, I have preferences for what I use and when.
And being sensitive, I'm, quite, well, sensitive to what I take in.
As much as I love the smoky fragrance of a white sage smudge stick burning in my office, sometimes I go overboard.
Too much sage can set off the smoke alarm in my house.
Setting off the alarm can happen when burning many natural plants, resin, and wood products for their healing and clearing properties.
Due to the residual moisture content in the leaves or within the cellular structure, the level of smoke when burning plant material can vary widely.
Yes, burning the most beautiful, natural smells and most potent healing and clearing plants used in the shamanic and spiritual communication arts will come with producing a certain degree of smoke.
Smoke can clear and lift energies from people and spaces.
Using intentional air movement, fragrance, and a bit of smoke, you can effectively energetically clear and shift the vibration of just about any space.
But what if the person you live with is sensitive to smoke, and what if that person is you?
You can minimize the smoke level while still using regular incense.
To reduce smoke, smudge with compressed plant materials such as with incense bricks and sticks.
The more compressed the plant material, the lower the moisture content, and usually, the lower the smoke point.
One of the best alternative tools to plant resins, woods, and leaf materials for clearing and healing spaces is incense sticks and compressed bricks.
My favorite incenses are those producing a natural, earthy fragrance (think campfire), have a slight amount of smoke, and are made of the most natural ingredients possible.
So below are my two favorite brands that include all of that -
incienso de santa fe
On the market today, one of my absolute favorite brands of incense makes Juniper and Cedarwood Incense in a sampler set.
It's made from compressed woods, with minimal moisture content, from trees in the Desert Southwest.
The incenses of Juniper and Cedar can be and often are swapped for Sage in space clearing and releasing lower energies rituals.
Not only is it low-smoke, but I am always complimented on the fragrance when I use any of their products.

After that, my other favorite incense is by the company Juniper Ridge.
All the plant materials used in this company are sustainably collected and wild-harvested.
They have incorporated the traditional energetic and spiritually clearing fragrances of white sage and sweetgrass into their collection.
