Today I am going to answer a question from a blog reader.
The concept we’re addressing today is that of strong clairsentient abilities, translating to anxiety and headaches, when someone has strong empathetic or sensitivities to those around them - either in the physical or the spiritual world.
This concept has come up in so many student questions, listener and reader questions, that I wanted to address it here on the blog.
I recently read one of your posts that spoke about anxiety and mediumship. I have always been aware of my empathic abilities but how do I know if I am a medium or not. I have struggled with general anxiety most of my life and over the past few months or so my symptoms have increased in intensity and frequency. I have been experiencing random pounding headaches, shortness of breath and dizzy spells that last for about 1 minute during each episode. This sometimes happens several times a day. I thought it might be my blood pressure, but the doctor says I’m fine.
Could this (mediumship) could be the cause of my anxiety getting worse? If so, what should I do when my symptoms start, in order to facilitate communication with Spirit and have the head pressure go away?

One of the things that pushed me over the edge and convinced me to finally start developing my own abilities, was an increase in activity around me. Around the turning point of me committing to developing my gifts, I felt like I was a pot of water on a stove and the burner was being turned up underneath me. Everything was intensifying.
I was not only experiencing an increase of spiritual incidences, but the way I experienced them, as anxiety, started to increase as well. The feelings of anxiety that I get when Spirits are present, common to many mediums, is something I now call, 'Spirit Pressure.'
Part of the reason why I think this is happening is to get your attention that your abilities are stronger than you think they are.
If things are happening to you here and there - a door creaks in May, a picture falls off the wall in August, in November, you hear someone whisper or call your name - there’s so much time between those experiences, that you can spend all that time in-between talking yourself out of it being real.
As a contrast to that slow and and gentle format of development, if you are bombarded, experiencing one thing, then the next, then the next, then the next, you do not have time to explain it away, since it is so in your face.
One of the primary ways people start to sense Spirit is through feeling some of the symptoms you explained - unexplained pressure increases usually around the chest and head area and fast moving energy - which generally feels like anxiety or adrenaline. It sounds like these sensations you are experiencing are actually Spirit trying to make you aware of their presence and to cue you in on the fact that you can sense them, too. To learn more about this, I suggest checking out the Spirit Identification Key.
Now, people who are empaths, like yourself, are also clairsentient. Clairsentience is the ability to feel energy and this ability, can be translated to feeling the energy of those in the Spiritual world. Thus, your ability to feel clear the emotions and thoughts of other living people, can be translated to, you know, those in non-physical form. If you already recognize yourself as highly sensitive (a clear-senser) in the Physical World when dealing with people’s thoughts and emotions around you, that skill transfers easily over to the Spirit World, when dealing with the thoughts, emotions and energy of those in Spirit form.
How can you begin to tame these symptoms into something usable?
Accept them. Welcome them in.
Begin to acknowledge that this may be what is happening.
If Spirit is trying to get your attention, which it sounds like they are, generally, it’s because a group of individuals who want to be your friends - your Spirit Guides, Guardian Angels and Loved Ones want you to acknowledge the strength of your gifts and to show how powerful they are.
Not to punish you, frighten you or to scare you - but to demonstrate - “Look! Pay attention! This is what you are capable of!”
Part of the reason for increasing the intensity and the frequency of your experiences, is because your Spirit friends may want to get your attention so you will do something about your experiences. This something is learning and development.
Making a commitment to do this is the most common cure for those who are experiencing an increase in spiritual or intuitive experiences. In some cases, as soon as you agree, things begin to go back to ‘normal’.
Then, tell those in Spirit to calm down and to quit producing these symptoms while you learn about your abilities. Often, so long as your Spirit Guides know they’ve gotten your attention and you’re going to do something about - they’ll back off for a while.
So, in summary, it sounds like what you are experiencing is a sign that someone or a group of someones in Spirit are trying to get your attention, likely to convince you to commit to developing your abilities.
When you do so, often, things cool down . . . rather dramatically in most cases.
