A few days ago, I walked into my house and noticed a small package sitting on my mail table.
I didn’t notice the crystals that were there, or the seashells I’ve collected from the ocean or the dish that they were sitting in. I didn’t notice my dog’s leash or the garage door opener that was sitting right next to it. And I certainly didn’t immediately notice anything else in my house - except this new package.
It was new, it wasn’t there this morning and I certainly hadn’t seen it before.
I hadn’t ordered anything, so I wasn’t expecting a package.
This new package surprised me.
When you start the process of beginning to sense, feel and pick up on those in Spirit, your mind, your heart and your own Spirit is trained to pick up on anything that is new, out of the ordinary and unexpected first.
We are trained to pick up on the new and the non-ordinary.
Your ability to notice newness is keen, sharp and on-point, just like mine.
Because of this tendency for us to notice the new, a new unfamiliar Spirit in your space is much easier to sense, than an old, familiar Spirit in your space.
Imagine your mother is crossed-over.
You grew up with her. She raised you. You spent countless nights snuggled into her chest and being surrounded by her presence. You know what it feels like to be around her like the back of your hand and in fact, her presence is highly comforting you.
Your mother is a familiar presence - even though she may be Spirit now - you know what she feels like. You likely know it so well, you’ve memorized it, that you don’t even realize you know it anymore.
Picking up on familiarity, noticing and identifying the ‘old’ in equal measure as the ‘new’, takes more intentional awareness to environment and to the subtle changes that go on around and within you than does picking up an unfamiliar presence.
It is easier to sense and perceive someone that is unfamiliar, than someone that is familiar.
For example, imagine that just four days ago, your neighbor’s father died.
You, minding your own business, are flipping through the television channels on your couch, when suddenly, you see a man standing in the doorway out of the corner of your eye. You turn to look, and nope, definitely not your husband or your son.
No one is there . . . physically.
So, you go back to watching Alaska Bounty Hunters, and suddenly you realize your feet are freezing and you need a blanket - brrr, it’s cold in here. You go to grab your blanket, sit back down, and settle in.
Again, you see a man in a shadowy light out of the corner of your eye.
Guess what? It’s likely your neighbor’s farther.
You can perceive him, because he’s normally not dead and therefore normally not in your house.
Now . . . what about your mother, who you have always known and has been following you around and watching you grow up into the beautiful woman you've become, ever since she has crossed?
As a Spirit watching over you, she’s a part of your daily life. She's familiar.
So, she would be harder for you to identify, a signal out, if she was around you.
That doesn’t mean you can’t feel her or notice her when she is present.
It just takes intentionality.
You can just as easily see the dog’s leash and the seashells, just as easily as you can see the new package that just arrived.
